I have a Sig 229 in .40 that I also have a Bar-Sto 9mm barrel and 9mm mags for. I took it to the range today to see if I wanted to shoot it like that in an upcoming match. I was also using up some 8 year old Miwall reload 9mm. Everything was going fine until about 50 rounds in when I was about 4 or 5 into a string of shots and BOOM, sparks came shooting out the back between the slide and frame, hot stuff smacks into my face(thank you safety glasses!) and the web of my right hand is stinging. My first thought was, "Aw crap, not my 229!" expecting to see some damage. I noticed that the slide was jammed halfway back with the next round that failed to feed. I dropped the mag and locked the slide to the rear and the jammed round fell free.
Thinking it fired out of battery, I looked around on the floor expecting to find a burst case. Either it got tossed pretty far or it didn't burst. I then took the pistol apart to check for damage. I saw nothing obvious or noticeable other than that it was clear that hot gases had come out the back as there was directional crud under the rear part of the slide that I had not seen before.
My right hand had black soot all over the web. I wiped it off an noticed that I had a very mild burn there(pictured below.)
I put the gun back together, loaded one round and fired. Worked fine. Loaded five rounds and all worked fine. I put close to 100 rounds through it after the failure without a hiccup. I'm glad Sigs are tough as it doesn't seem to have been affected at all.
So do you think it was a bad round(Miwall reloads...) or did it somehow fire out of battery? I doubt the latter as semis are designed not to fire when not locked up.
But if it fired in battery, what would have caused the failure to feed of the next round? If it was a double charged round that blew, the slide would clearly have been kicked back far enough to grab the next one.
I dunno. I've never had that happen before and am not looking forward to it ever happening again.
As a side note, I've decided to shoot .40 in the match. I just don't like shooting 9mm, especially from this gun that I have over 15k rounds of .40 through. Besides, the PoI was low and left w/ the 9 vs just a touch low and centered w/ the .40.
