Springfield Armory Letter Codes

Just got my 2nd 1911 and it is by Springfield Armory. A 3rd SA is also on the way after 30 days. 2nd one is a Mil-Spec.

Can anyone lead me to a link or a thread where the letters of the model numbers signifies. The Mil-Spec has a PB9108L. My incoming 3rd 1911 would have PC9105L. I did not mention the ending "P" for that is the only letter I know signifying "Package".

What's a 9108 or a 9105? PB, PC, PX or PI?

If you click on the Model (Loaded, Mil-Spec, etc.) and then go over to the right of the page and click on the drop-down that says "Select Model for Specs" I think it will show all the different codes, and specs for each.

P=denotes that it is a 1911

B=Brazil (imported as a complete pistol from Brazil)
I=Assembled in U.S.
C=Custom (U.S. made)
X="loaded" models (imported as a complete pistol from Brazil)

Those are general rules. You could have a "loaded" model that is a PI, like the loaded target models.

After reading this I went to Springfield's website. It looks like there aren't many that are made in the USA. Made in America? yeah..... South America. That is sad.

Alchemy, was my NM serial numbered Mil Spec forged in Brazil and assembled-finished in the USA? I cant find any Imbel marks or Brazil anywhere on the gun.

There is nothing in the gun model number to tell you where the gun was manufactered. Serial number yes, model no.

Google the model number you will get the full spec's and model info.

^^Under dust cover or if older under the grips, should see FI Brazil.

If you can not find it, that's pertty rare.

Oh, all forged in Brazil, N=assembled in Brazil, NM=assembled in house at Springfield.

Most Springfield 1911s are still assembled/fitted in US, just the metal/materials are made in Brazil. Some are made/assembled in Brazil(rare I think, havent seen one yet personally).

If they are marked Made in Brazil, they were assembled there and then imported. If they are marked Made in USA, more than 51% of the final assembly/machining was done domestically

Does it matter? Not really. Would I own another Springfield 1911? Absolutely. I just assumed that most of their 1911s were made in the USA. I knew some were made in Brazil, but had no idea it was that many. It made me think about seeing an American flag with a tag that says "MADE IN CHINA"

Makes me wonder if it is an actual Springfield Armory facility or a sub-contracted facility. Maybe Taurus makes the parts?.

They are forged by IMBEL...the "N" serial units are also finished in Brazil.
