Professional training for first times shooter

Merry Christmas calgunners!

My brother in law is in need of some advice. He is looking to start buying some handguns soon, and really wants to make sure his girlfriend gets some good professional training before bringing them into the house. She has no experience with firearms. Can anyone give me some advice for him on a good trainer in the area of Vacaville. I know of Center Mass in Vacaville, but have no experience with any of their instructors. Any feedback would be helpful. thanks in advance!

I wish I could point you in the right direction, but I'm not familiar with that area. But, hats off to your brother-in-law for realizing that "professional" training is superior to him taking her to the local range and showing her himself.

It's kind of a long drive from Vacaville, but Bayprofs puts on a very good NRA Basic Handgun class. Also, check out Bill Tidwell.

1. Safe and comfortable around handguns...usually a nice pre-requsite before bringing them into the home
2. Knowledgeable about different platforms and how to clear them...a nice first step before making a platform selection.
3. Competent shooter.

I have some experience working with new female shooters and have found it important to set reasonable goals and expectations while keeping in mind their different communication style.

I'd say a little bit of both 1 and 2. he wants to get her introduced to the safe practices of having a gun. Also she should be comfortable with the general use of the firearm. Maybe even learn about the different platforms. He would like her to be able to use it for SD should the need arise.

This company offers one on one training for less than what other guys charge to attend a class of 15 people.

Definitely a good idea to have the people in your life get some training before bringing firearms into the home. My wife has gone out and got instruction (actually from 9mmepiphany) and she's going back out this week for some more with 9mmepiphany. This will be her first outing back after giving birth to our daughter. Definitely look for someone in the area and if your brother in law could connect with 9mmepiphany. He's good. I also think Wes at lfiguns.com which was suggested in an earlier post is a good instructor as well.

Lots of people with cheap(Meaning inexpensive) Front Sight course certificates on these boards .
I've taken a dozen or so classes from Front Sight and have enjoyed them all. AND I have yet to see anyone leaving those course who didn't think they were great.
Good luck with whichever training you choose to get. Getting training is a wise decision.
