    Handgun Transfer

Hey guys, I am sure this has been talked about but i couldnt find all the answers to my questions using the search. I want to do a transfer of a handgun from my dad to me. Do i have to take that handgun safety test before i send in the form? Also, it asks for a signature at the bottom of the page. Do I sign it or does my dad sign it? The instructions didnt specify that. Also for the part where it asks how the gun was acquired I put that it was a gift from my dad. Is this an ok reason?

Yes, you have to have your Handgun Safety Certificate before you can take possession of the handgun. Yes, you sign the form, not your father. Yes, the handgun can be a gift.

    Good luck with the transfer.

In the "Aquired From" space put in your Father's name and "(Father)". Or else they'll call you in a week and ask you what relationship you have.

I would. Don't worry, the test for the HSC is not difficult. If you find that it is, then you probably shouldn't be getting a firearm of any type.

I know, the HSC is a joke. Thats why i was wondering if I HAVE to take it. Its just gonna be a waste of my time. Oh well, i guess its worth it.

There are a couple ways you can do this "transfer". One is through a FFL and will require a HSC card and the 10 day waiting period. The other is called a "Intra-Familial Handgun Transactions" and only requires that it is a member of yur family. With this form no HSC is needed and no waiting period. The person receiving the gun just fills out the form and send in the form with $19 and the gun is his.

I was told that there is a special legal document to transfer from father (or grandfather) in kali which does not require the same BS as the typical PPT process. It can even be done for a non-list gun briught in from out of state.

I am not sure you need the safety cert for this one. If it was from a regular party, yes. I think the father one is exempt if you use the other form.

That's the one that is exempt. BTW, your father or grandfather can even bring non-list guns into the state and transfer them legally to you using this form (according to the folks at sacto DOJ office).

Nope, you still need the HSC even getting the handgun from your Father.
                      Read this:

                      Question 13 is

Do I need a Handgun Safety Certificate (HSC) if I am receiving a handgun from my mother or father?

Yes. Prior to taking possession of the handgun, you must havea valid Handgun Safety Certificate (HSC). You must also report the transfer to DOJ, pursuant to Penal Code section 12078(c)(2)(A), within 30 days of the transfer. You may obtain Form FD4544A [PDF 28 kb / 2 pg] for this purpose on this website.

You need to have a HSC even if you're being loaned a handgun.

But yes, if you are receiving a handgun via a intra-familial transfer, you get to skip the PPT and just get it from your father.
