    Sig 556 pistol legality question

Hello everyone! I had a odd ball question about a future purchase. Ive shot a few AR 15 pistols and I really liked that you can rest your cheek on the spring tube and use the sights easier.

    The concept:
By my understanding, on a AR pistol you can legally keep a spring tube that can accept a butt stock by wrapping it with 550 cord ( There is a ATF letter out there that describes this, does anyone have a link to it?? ).

    Applying the concept:
My thought is to buy a Sig 556 pistol, then a folding stock. Get rid of the butt stock and keep the tube. Then wrap the tube in 550 cord so it cannot take a stock and attach it to the 556 pistol.

So I would be left with a tube that cannot accept a butt stock and could be extended when im shooting and folded when im transporting it back home. What do you guys think about this?? Is it legal or no??

AR pistols need a buffer tube in order to work.

The SIG P556 and AK pistols do not need a buffer tube in order to work.
Installing a tube/strut/etc onto a SIG P556 or an AK pistol, could be viewed as redesigning the firearm to be fired from the shoulder, which would make it a SBR.

Unless you have $$$$$ for lawyer fees to fight a SBR charge, do not do what you are thinking about.

If you are very good at getting bureaucracies to do your bidding then you could write a letter to the technology branch of BATFE (registered mail), and if you are very lucky they may reply back in a few months.

It could also go the other way and have them say it is definitely illegal, so unless you are a better wordsmith then I am, trying this may be risky...

You would then need to do the same thing to CA DOJ, but we know they never reply to "is this legal" questions... so good luck with that one...

Good luck trying to get approval from the BATFE and the CA DOJ BOF.

You will have better odds at winning the lotto.
