    Self registration?

Just moved back into the state after a five year absence:

What is the self registration requirement for handguns that were bought in this state from private party before registration was required (1980s)?

What is the self registration requirement for handguns bought during the 5 years out of state from an FFL where I resided?

Do these firearms have to be on the "approved" handgun list from DOJ in order to be registered under self registration?

All the same - file the new-resident form http://oag.ca.gov/sites/oag.ca.gov/f...s/ab991frm.pdf with $19 for EACH handgun.

If you bought through a CA dealer before you left, those should still be on file - because there's no mechanism to say 'I'm outta here!' and get them out of the database.

The Roster does NOT apply to guns you bring into the state, but any large-capacity magazines acquired out of state should be either left out, or disassembled and not reassembled inside CA.

Frozen in 2015, it is falling out of date and I can no longer edit the content. But much of it is still good!

Thanks, I already had the high caps for both pistols, as I had an S&W 469 and Browning Hipower going back to the 1980s anf 1990s, when I carried and qualified with them as a LEO in California. I sold he pistols awhile ago, but kept the mags knowing I would eventually replace the pistols. We are just moving in, so I guess I will do it as soon as I get a permanent address. I had 90 days, right?

It's not automatically done, but there is a way to "deregister" handguns when you become a resident of anther state.

The No Longer In Possession of Handgun form can be used to "deregister" handguns when you become a resident of another state.

If you checked the No Longer a Resident of California box, list the date that you established residency in a state outside of California, or country outside of the United States. You must also attach a legible copy of your government-issued identification from the other state or country.

You have 60 days...however, I suspect no one is checking.

The 60 day time period starts when you bring the handgun into CA, after you establish CA residency.

There is also no penalty if you register after the 60 day time period.
