Rock Island Armory - ordinary looking daily carry and reliable frequent shooter.

Springfield - nice looking. High "wow factor" among many shooters.

Auto Ordinance - Has history of malfunctions before Kahr bought production.

I'm looking at the model similar to the GI .45 by SA. I like the nostalgia of those old looking guns. Wouldn't mind spending about $500-800. If anyone has one to sell I'll be in a position to buy probably in February but I want to start doing my research. Thanks!
I would do the Springfield...though if you find a Rock Island Arsenal for cheap I would definitely pick it up, I'm thinking you meant Rock Island Armory though

Hard to go wrong with the Springfields. SA has excellent customer service as well.

+1 for Springfield. Excellent quality, reliable, and great customer service. Worth the money.

This. Why is Colt not on your list? Good thing that it is not so someone that knows can get it over you.

Never been too impressed with the colts. Some people are just hung up on the name. Again, go for the springer or the RIA you want to spend a little less

Ordnance; having to do with munitions and explosives.

OrdInance; having to do with laws and regulations.

The traitor is the plague."......Cicero

My opinion, after buying a 1911 this year (An STI), is make sure you know which features you really want. What I mean is things like trigger pull, stippling on the grip, ambidextrous safety, and other things. All of these can be done after your purchase, but it's generally cheaper to buy a gun with it already there.

If you like the nostalgia of the old looking guns, then you probably aren't looking for a "fully loaded" 1911 with all of the bells and whistles, the SA is a good choice.

Good, but you'll have to deal with SSE or finding one via PPT (if you're not roster-exempt for buying handguns).

After that added cost, you're going to be almost in the non-rail TRP price range, and much higher than the Loaded price range.

Can you explain what SSE is? And this handgun is actually going to be purchased by my dad and interfamily transferred to me. He is retired Marine Corps does that get him roster exemption?

check out that thread. It explains how they convert to Single Shot Exemption for you. Once you receive the pistol, you convert it back legally to the original formation. And no, unfortunately he is not exempt from the roster unless he is current active duty LEO

+1. I am on their waiting list, that is long and distinguished. I was told 2-4 months - best guess. I sure hope it is worth the wait as it will be my first 1911.
