Ruger Security Six 2.75"

I have the chance to acquire a 1987 Ruger Security Six w/ a 2.75 inch barrel. It is blued and in wonderful condition ( 2-300 rounds, no blemishes). Trigger job done by Davis(?was told this, but have no knowledge of who Davis is). Handled it and it is tight. What are your knowledgeable opinions on this gun? reasonable price? accuracy? reliability? badassness? Thanks for any info

I would jump on it. They don't come around that often anymore, and it's (by all accounts) a good solid pistol.

Price? $350.00 - $400 tops.

I'm assuming it's probably Bain & Davis, could be wrong though.

Bill Davis was a gunsmith that specialized in PPC revolvers in the 1970's out of California, I believe in the Sacramento area.

He did amazing revolver work, so yes, I would jump on that if he did the internal work. He did conversions of ruger security sixes by adding on python barrels. Did this for smiths and rugers. Smiths were SMOLTS and rugers were cougars.

My brother has a Security Six with a python barrel by Davis.

The Ruger Service/Security/Speed Six series are all variants of the same thing...same strength, frame size, etc.

They were just a tad bigger than the S&W K-frames and a lot tougher. They lack the K's weak spot at the bottom-rear of the barrel (six o'clock on the throat). They can handle serious diets of "real" 357 loads without a hitch.

The GP100 is at least theoretically tougher yet, but not as "slick" as the earlier DA "six series" Rugers.

The only remaining example of the older Ruger DA series still in the lineup is the Redhawk, which is basically the same as the Security Six except bigger (44Magnum).

I think of my Ruger Security Six as a MINI redhawk!

I paid 450.00 for mine and it is in 90% condition with very tight lockup.
Happy with it, easy to work on, solid.
I know where there is a 9mm Speed six for 450.00 and considering that one too!

Post a picture when you get it. Never seen a snub nose Sec6. I've got a 4" Blued in 100% unfired and its gooorgeous. Rugers are solid. Dont wait too long.

Buy it. They are excellent guns. I bought a 3" service six years ago, all it needed was a tyler t-grip and it was good to go. They are keepers.

The security six is an excellent gun. I have one w/4" bbl I've owned since 1975 with no complaints. I did have to replace the trigger return spring about ten or so years ago. The shorter barrel may command a premium.

As for badassness? Dunno. Personally I think just about any 3" or 6" revolver qualifies.

Yes, Bill Davis had a shop in West Sac (later Rancho Cordova), and specialized in custom PPC revolvers. His hybrids were world-class, and the quality of worksmanship made you think they were factory produced.

I have a "Cougar" that he made for my father (Ruger Security-Six frame mated with a Colt Python barrel). The trigger on that gun is unbelievable.
