Which mag for Kimber CDP custom...

Hi All,

Just bought a Kimber Custom CDP II and it only came with one mag. I was wondering where to get additional mags at a decent price. I see there are 7, 8 and 10 round mags. But not sure which to get since this is my first 1911. Here what I see when looking:

Notes on Selecting the Correct 1911 Magazine:
-If the grips on your 1911 measure 4" long, you have a Government/Commander length grip
-If the grips on your 1911 measure 3-1/2" long, you have an Officer/Defender length grip
-Please check grip length before ordering

Do I have the Government/Commander size since it's a 5"? Also what brands should I look for and what to stay away from?

Did you try to load your magazine? From the kimber website it says the CDP's have a 7 round capacity. From experience Chip McCormick magazines seem to work very well. The CMC shooting star mags can be had for about 12 dollars they work great.

Yes, the mag that comes with the gun is 7 rounds. Can I get 8 rounds or maybe 10 for the range? I saw these:

Don't use steel followers on an aluminum gun

Your Kimber CDP has an aluminum frame, according to the Kimber website. The McCormick magazines you mention have a steel follower, which can scratch the aluminum feed ramp on your gun. I would recommend using the Wilson Combat magazines instead, which have a nylon follower that won't scratch aluminum.

Magazines for your gun are available in 7 or 8 rounds without extending much below the gun. You can also get 10 rounders, but they will stick out from the bottom of the gun. Here is the picture of your gun on the Kimber website:

Mags are one thing that I do not mess with in any weapon, I would use only Kimber Mags to avoid issues.

Okay, so I'll look into the Wilson Combat. I noticed the mag that comes with the gun is all metal. Should I not use it then if it may also scratch the feed ramp?

Be very careful of the Kimber factory mag with your CDP. If you look at the follower on the mag, you will see it is split with an upper part to cradle the ammo and a lower part that engages the slide stop. The front of the lower one is sharp. If you slam an empty magazine into your gun, the lower pointed follower can ding the frame under the feed ramp since the follower is unsupported in the front. It can rock in the magazine body and the sharp pointed edge sticks out beyond the mag body.

When this happens, the frame under the feed ramp looks like this: (not my CDP)


The dings are strictly "cosmetic" but nobody wants dings in their guns.

You have a Government size 1911. I'd suggest you get magazines with either a plastic follower or the rounded metal followers. Wilson Combat mags are what many consider top of the line. You can find them for about 24 bucks each on-line.

Metalform magazines with the rounded follower or their orange plastic follower are also good for alloy frame guns.

The Wilsons you want to get that everyone recommends would be the Wilson 47D. It is a 8-round magazine as you inquired earlier. Wilson also makes 10 rounders if you choose.

Can't help you with an online source, but I have had great luck with the Wilson 8 rounders. They poke a *tiny* bit out of the bottom of the gun, but nothing that causes any heartache.

Yup, Steve's right, it'll stick out a tiny bit unless you have a magazine well on the gun. You can also get the lower profile basepads for the 47Ds that wont stick out as much as seen below:

+1 on the Wilson 47Ds. I like that the base pads stick out a bit so I have something to push on when I change mags quickly. I find the flush ones take an extra bit of attention to make sure they are seated. I don't carry, so the little extra protrusion doesn't matter anyway.

I use the Wilson 47D magazines with the low profile baseplate in my Kimber Pro CDP. They are 8 rounders and extend slightly below the grip, as shown in the picture below:
