    TLR1 vs. TLR3

I think there was a discussion here recently about the TLR1 vs. the TLR3. Or maybe it was another forum. Anyway, I have them both. In the attached picture, the TLR3 is mounted on my HK USP Compact 9mm, and the TLR1 is shown right below it for comparison. The TLR1 is rated at more light output.

The HK has a proprietary rail molded in it, which is irritating and makes no sense. Look closely and you'll see an adapter attached to the rail for the Streamlight products. I think this adapter probably puts the TLR3 a tad lower relative to the trigger guard than what would be ideal. I have long fingers so it works for me, though.

One of these lights will get assigned duty on the G17 Gen 4 I just bought, which is back at the factory right now for the latest updates.

I'm hoping they'll mount directly to the Gen 4 Glock's rail. The TLR3 came with some little inserts for various makes of pistol including Glock.

This series of HK, in case you're wondering, are pretty accurate shooters and great pistols, but the mag release must have been designed by someone with mental illness. A thought has crept into my mind to sell or trade it for a brand new G19 Gen 4.

Interesting. My tlr3 was on mine and other's USP's for over 4k rounds and never budged. It was the standard model too with no adapters installed that came with it. It fit on other pistols and rifles as well. Wonder if I had a reject?

To be clear, I had the surefire rail adaptor but never needed to install it - just screwed on the tlr3.

Good luck with your choice! I actually wished my Glock had the same release as my HK!

Drunktank, you got me thinking. I put the rail adapter on the HK because at the time, Streamlight said it was necessary to fit the TLR-1. Maybe I don't need it for the TLR 3. I'll have to fiddle around with that and see what happens.

        Thanks for that comment.

I have a TLR-1 on my full sized HK USP .45

It DEFINITELY required the adapter (Mine's GG&G) to fit on the pistol. HK put a proprietary rail on their pistols so people would buy their proprietary ugly and overpriced light along with the overpriced magazines too.

Yup, that's my understanding, and it's a lousy policy. Or maybe it's some kind of European standard, incompatible with the U.S.? I don't think so.

They don't do it anymore. The new HK models (P30, HK45, etc) have standard rails.

The usp is a fairly old model, it was designed late 80s and came out early 90s. The usp has proprietary rails because picatiny rails weren't as common and more of a "standard" as they are now.

On another note, I find nothing wrong with the mag release on the usp. Seems pretty perfect to me
