Non-resident importing handgun to secondary home

When you move to CA your father (who still resides outside of CA) can “intrafamilial transfer” you an off roster pistol via an FFL without issue. The roster does not apply to intrafamilial transfers.
I am a little unsure about your specific question but what I have described will allow you to receive off-roster pistols from out of state, granted you must use the legal avenues for receivership (FFL because its over state lines, etc). AW laws still apply (like a pistol w/ a threaded barrel and detachable magazine is a no-no).
Long story short, you father who resides in (insert free state name here) can buy any pistol, presuming its not an “assault weapon” by california law, ship to an FFL that understands IFT with a note “gifting” it to you, and it will be transferred and in your name 100% legal.

How about this: your father gives you your handgun gifts BEFORE you move to CA - following the laws of wherever you live now - and you bring whatever you like when you move. Storing them off-campus or away from college housing seems like a good plan.
Since you're not moving here to make this state your home, you don't need to register any of the handguns you bring.
I would suggest that the 'father buys and brings and leaves here' process is illegally importing, violating PC 12125 - it's the leaving it here part that seems to me to be the issue.
Don't bring magazines with capacities of 11 or more, though.
Lets say you currently live in Texas, just so we have a named referent.
You can 'move' here, get CA ID, make yourself eligible to buy guns here, and make it difficult to deal with out of state gun transfers.
OR, you can 'visit' here, until you actually plan to make CA your home, keep your TX ID, go back and forth to TX, buy and receive guns at home in TX, bring them back and forth to and from CA.
Unless you plan to attend a state school and need to switch to in-state tuition after being here long enough, I don't see any strong reason to 'move' here while you're in school.ARCHIVED Calguns Foundation Wiki here: http://web.archive.org/web/201908310...itle=Main_Page
