    Mag lock?

I`ve seen several post about magizine locks and how people loath them can someone give an over view of the system and why its a bother, what about it makes it a nuisance and or unsafe in a self defence situation?

Try doing a hastened reload with an AK the way it was designed and then try with a maglock.

In a self defense situation, if the bad guy releases your magazine, gun no worky. Magazine disconnects prevent the gun from firing without the magazine being inserted.

For the most part, people loath magazine disconnect "safeties" because it is an unnecessary feature added to a firearm pretty much to appease lawyers or state legislation. A lot of folks see it as one more thing that can go wrong.

The intended purpose of a magazine disconnect is to make the firearm incapable of firing when the magazine is removed as an added “safety” feature. I believe the new lawyer “safeties” can actually have the opposite effect, especially for people who are new to firearms. I think it actually proliferates poor firearm handling in which people will believe a firearm is safe if they remove the magazine even though there may still be a round in the chamber. Since a vast majority of firearms do not have a magazine disconnect feature, this can lead to some precarious situations.

Also, depending on the firearm, a magazine disconnect feature may prevent the magazines from dropping free. This might complicate a swift reload if you don’t train for it.

I know it's probably been discussed - but since this thread is on the topic...

Is it illegal to disable mag disconnect?... I have CA approved guns without it, but for the ones that were manufactured with it - will there be legal implications if it's revealed that is was disabled?

Nothing illeagal about gunsmithing your gun, so long as it complies with dimention and capacity limits.

Mag disconnect sounds like a redondent unnecessary system, a selling point.

Its an example of a lawyer behind a desk make decisions on something he knows nothing about. Its a "feel-good" feature that IMO causes more harm than good. I have one firearm with a mag disconnect and I have removed the system completely.

It's also unsafe because many pistols require you to pull the trigger when disassembling it. That means you have to have the mag in the pistol and pull the trigger which can lead to accidents.

I realize it would probably never come to light... but it is the lawyer issue that has me somewhat concerned... I figured there was no "law" against it - but just to be clear...

If (hypothetically) I disabled the mag safety and (as unlikely as it may be) was involved in a shooting - in my home for example - and for a variety of reasons, mag was released and I fired at assailant, wounding or killing... and gun was determined to be modified from factory configuration (being the mag release removal) - there isn't anything that legally could be held against me right?

I'm referring solely to the fact that the pistol had been altered from it's OEM safety feature (not any other factors regarding the shooting).

I'm not trying to be overly analytical - or looking for problems... the reason for my concern is I want to fix my M&P .45 which is my bedside gun and primary go to handgun... any other time/gun I wouldn't be so cautious.

Thanks for the insight and clarification... and further info if any.
