    Removing the S&W internal lock

so I watched this video as I'm very interested in getting a S&W revolver. (good watch if you can get past the early 80's porn music in the background).

Has anyone done this? If so what is your experience with the gun afterwards?

I haven't done it as mine has never given me any problems, but lots of guys over at S&W forum have performed the mod. The videos I've seen look fairly simple, so I doubt you'd have any problem.

    Good luck.

      Yes I did mine:

It's not hard I've done it on mine: http://www.calguns.net/calgunforum/s...d.php?t=330355

I would recommend having a few extra parts on hand. such as a spare hand spring and a bolt plunger and spring. I'd also recommend the "plug" sold by a member of the S&W forum: http://smith-wessonforum.com/

I removed the lock from one of my S&W's and plugged the hole. It worked just as well afterwards as before.

Why remove the internal lock? I have an S&W 620 and haven't had any problems with it.

There have been reports of it inadvertently locking up on some guns. One of the best features of a revolver is its reliability. If the presence of the lock bothers some people, they just remove it. It's not hard to do and can offer extra piece of mind. If I used mine as a nightstand or carry gun I'd consider removing the lock as well. IMO it's a shame S&W put the locks on them to begin with.

It probably is unnecessary. In my case the gun is for backpacking or a backup when hunting. I read the horror stories so I just removed the lock.

It wouldn't surprise me if S&W figured it was only a matter of time until some nitwit lawyer (is there any other kind?) tried to sue them for not having a safety on it, so they would beat him to a pulp, I mean they would beat him to the punch.

Now what we really need is a silencer for revolvers like they have in the movies. Wonderful stuff in Hollywood.

The only problem I have with my 620 is the trigger pull in D/A.

                  My only complaint.

I grind off the part that locks and then reinstall the parts and there is no locking. The more parts there are the more there is to fail.

I have several S&W's with the lock and haven't ever had a problem. I think the fear of the gun locking up from recoil that's spread over the internet is way overrated and I don't give a single thought to my guns locking up when I use them.

I would rather have a gun with no lock than with the lock but that's not always an easy option in California. At first I considered removing the lock on my revolvers and replacing them with "The Plug" but after seeing the price of it and multiplying it by how many I would need to fill all my guns I changed my mind.

If I wanted to get rid of the lock I would just permanently disable it instead of removing all the components and be left with holes and gaps in the frame by the hammer.

I find that the only time the internal lock really bothers me is when I read about how horrible the lock is on the internet. In reality when I'm shooting it makes no difference to me.

Removed mine and plugged the Hole via the S&W forum as described earlier. Why have a lock than could fail rather then eliminate the possibility entirely?

The lock originated with the Company that bought S&W, Safe T Lock...it was their idiot design...

No but buying pre-lock guns from out of state without single shot exemption is. I don't have any FFL's in my area that I know of that will deal with the SSE so my only option to buy a used pre-lock is if it is face-to-face transaction.

have you considered buying one without the internal lock?
