AR legality question

Hey,

I've tried to search on here and ar15.com but have not had any luck. People have posted that once you slide a 0 round sled into an AR pistol it can then be taken out and used with 10 rd magazines. I have yet to find any information on this besides people saying that it is "legal." Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

You can upgrade it to 10 round mags after DROS. However, you STILL must use a BB/fixed mag setup while in CA. Can't use 11+ round mags in it.

Flowchart does not cover the single shot exemption, which is what the OP is referring to.

OP, always remember, "That which is not forbidden is permitted"

The PC does not indicate what is legal, it indicates what is illegal.
The only time it indicates what is legal is when it is an exception to something normally illegal.
The example in this case is the single shot exemption.

It is illegal to manufacture a non-rostered handgun within California
It is illegal to obtain a non-rostered handgun from a dealer.

There are exemptions.
One exemption is for cops.
Another exemption is for PPT/Consignment.
Another exemption is intrafamilial transfer.
Another exemption is the "Dimentionally compliant, single-shot" configuration.


That covers the exemption that makes buying/building the single shot AR pistol legal.

So how then is it legal to use a 10rd magazine?

It is not illegal to modify or upgrade a firearm so long as the gun does not pass through any unlawful status such as AW or NFA.
Removing the zero-round sled and replacing it with a 10rd magazine does not create an AW, and it does not violate NFA.

So we're back to the roster.
It is illegal to manufacture or "buy" (for lack of a better word) a non-rostered handgun.
Removing the sled and installing a magazine is neither "manufacturing" nor is it "buying".

It's a simple modification and legal.
