Protip: Don't drop the slide on an empty chamber. Won't destroy your gun, but do it enough times and that steel on steel impact (especially with tighter tolerances on a 1911) may damage your trigger.

If you want a GI plug and rod you can get them here for $4 each. They also have a special on shipping of $5 until monday. http://www.cdnninvestments.com/19oerecsprin.html

        jcaoloveshine,
Would you then recomend reassembly with a snap cap in the chamber?

Long as you're following proper procedure you'll adapt it's just nervousness and a new procedure. It will loosen up a bit.. hang in there and fire plenty of FMJ to run it in don't worry to much about ftf or fte for ther 1st 1000 rounds get some chip mcormicks shooting stars I find them cheap and reliable in my Kimber Custom II. Lube till it's almost dripping and enjoy a real man stopper. I have moved to Hornady Critical Defense from Speer Gold dots due to feed issues.http://www.hornady.com/store/critical_defense

Yes, and somewhat yes. First few times field stripping a 1911 can be an arduous task but you'll get the hang of it.

Field stripping a 1911 is like walking and breathing at the same time. Should not take more than 5-6 seconds to strip and 10-15 seconds to assemble. They did this crap 100 years ago.

Practice, practice, and again practice. After awhile should become second nature.

I can't believe I'm already considering changing parts on this gun and I have not even had time to take it to the range yet. The effects of 1911 sickness are slowly infecting me apparently. I'm going to try to learn to tame the FLGR for awhile but if we can't get along the GI rod is always an option.
The gun only came with one 8-round magazine. I ordered 3 Colt SS mags from Midway for $20 each. Bought as much 230gr FMJ PMC ammo I could afford at the Vallejo GS last Saturday for $15 a box. If things work out I'll take it to the range next Thursday.
                  Very interesting discussion. Thanks!

I actually find the FLGR easier to assemble and disassemble. Plus with the FLGR, if you remove the slide stop pin first, you can disassemble the upper off the frame. Do not put a snap cap in until you finish assembling the gun.

That's the way you field strip one with the GI guide rod too...you just hold your hand under the slide

Yes, the slide lock pin goes through the loopy floppy thingy on the barrel, AKA the barrel link () Do not force or twist! (Google "idiot mark") Sometimes it takes a bit of fiddling & futzing and sometimes I even take the whole schlemiel apart & start over. Just be patient. If you have somebody local that can walk you through it mo' bettah.
I'm with you. Once you do it a few times it's really easy. My FN five seven took 7 seconds to completely field strip, but I still prefer my 1911 to it anyday

I replace the FLGR on my 1911s asap.

Ball point pen for what? Pushing the spring cup down while turning the barrel bushing I presume?
