    Ruger SP101

A friend wants to sell his SP101 .38 special. He bought it in 1991 for about $340. I'm interested in buying it but want to make sure its a fair deal. What would be a fair value for this revolver? He only put 200 rounds through it then kept it in the safe. It hasn't been used or cleaned in about 15 years but its still in good shape. It has minor pitting but nothing a good cleaning can take care of. Any help will be appreciated.

Great deal. Price would be from the $350 - $400 range.

If you don't want it let me know and I'll snag it for the price he paid

That's a fine weapon. I see it has the 3 inch barrel which is very desirable.

I would pay $400 for it. At least.

Really, they are very well built.

        Take care, Bob

I wouldn't give more than $350 - $400. I was seriously considering one until I found a great deal on a pre lock Smith Model 64-3.

Prices above seem to be right. They hold there value well.

$340 is a fair deal, it'll clean right up and be a great little shooter.

I have the SP101 also and love it.

However, mine is designated .357 Magnum, on the barrel and on the book. Yours seems to be designated .38 special on the book. Does it also say ".38 Special" on the barrel? Does this mean it's ".38 Special only" or can it take .357 as well?

                      It's a designated 38spl.

I'm impressed how this gun holds its private party value. It was blue booked today at $200-225! Which happens to be the price range we were talking about. My friend was convinced he would NOT be able to get his initial investment back.

Well your friend paid 340 so it's only fair he take 200 for it

$350 would be a fair price, considering that is a 38 and not a 357.

The SP 101 is quite a bit smaller than the GP 100. Not sure there are any real standards, but to me the GP 100 is a full size revolver, and the SP 101 I'd call a mid-sive revolver.
