Hi all,
I just found this site when searching for information on Colt Target Match Woodsmans..... So here's the deal...
I have three pistols in the safe..
1) Colt 1849 or 1851 Pocket Revolver with Stage Coach robbery engraving on the cylinder... Some bluing left, but not much
2) Colt Target Match Woodsman Series II .22 LR w/ 6" Barrel
3) Colt 1911 a1 accuratized .45, former military pistol accuratized by an Army gunsmith.
Now, I like the guns cause #1 is a piece of history, but ball and cap black powder? It will never be fired again.
The 22 is as accurate as I can hold a gun, but that's not saying much. Before I learned anything about it, I figured it was just a nice target pistol. It was bought new by my dad in about 1950 in Massatchusits, I have the reciept somewhere. It cost all of about $65 at the time!
The 45 was bought used for about $50 around 1950, I have the reciept for that as well somewhere.
These were all brought into CA in the 60s when my Dad started working at Stanford.....
So here's what I'm curious about.
Who knows of a good firearms appraiser in the SF bay area so I can find out what these are worth for insurance.
I'm thinkint the ball and cap Colt is pure history, but I want to store it properly so it doesn't degrade over time. Where's a good place to learn about and get the stuff to do this?
The 45 may be a fun shooter, or it may be worth enough to put away as well. How do I figure all this stuff out?
In reading here for a bit, it seems there are lots of laws about guns in Ca that I had no clue even existed. Where do I start learning?
Anyway, thank you all for your patience with these entry level questions. But we all have to start somewhere....
BTW, I did take the woodsman out once for shooting. Wow! It was fun. Cleaned it up and put it away. It was used for target work by my Dad for 2-3 years, but looks new, like it was just brought home from the store....
