    Field strip or no?

    So I inherited my dad's 1966 Colt 1911 .45.

I know it hasn't been fired in a few years. I have hundreds of hours of experience shooting and field stripping it, and have already taken it apart and cleaned and oiled it (It was pretty clean already, so there wasn't much to do). I'm wondering how often it needs to be detail stripped or if I should have it checked out by a gunsmith?

I also inherited my mom's 1960 Beretta 950-B Minx that I need to get a manual for since I've never taken it apart before and have no idea how to get the slide off

    Any ideas are welcome

If it wan't that dirty to begin with I wouldn't bother with a detailed strip down. I would also get a good manual if I were to try it....I like the this one. http://www.brownells.com/.aspx/pid=1...T-45-AUTOMATIC

If it's not going to get shot, field strip/clean every 3 to 6 months.

My dad stopped shooting the last few years of his life, but I'm going to shoot it regularly. When I lived in SoCal, I don't ever remember him detail stripping it. I'd usually be the one cleaning it, since I was the one pumping 500 rounds through it every other weekend :-P

I'm a bit of an obsessive gun cleaner, and thinking that even the firing pin (for example) might be really dirty makes me twitch, but I don't want to take it completely apart without it being completely necessary.
