Inheritting Pistols in CA - How does this work?

My father wants to give me a few of his pistols, but I am not too sure how this will work in regards to Cali's 1 pistol a month registration policy.

Since we are directly related, am I able to register all 4 pistols at a given time via some kind of private party transfer? Or do I have to arrange for some kind of storage at an FFL and register 1 per month >.<

If he's your father AND he's a California Resident... no need for an FFL. You just need to get an HSC card or be exempt from it and then you fill out an oplaw form (you can get it from the DoJ BOF website), fill it out and send it in with a check for $19/each handgun you need to register to you. Done. It can happen all at once. Oh, and there's no waiting period. You pick the pistols up, and within a certain period of time (60 days?) you must send the form in.

Make sure you've got the HSC or an exemption BEFORE you pick up the pistols.

Can I give a firearm to my adult child? Can he/she give it back to me later?

Yes, as long as the adult child receiving the firearm is not in a prohibited category PDF logo [PDF 10 kb / 1 pg] and the firearm is a legal firearm to possess, the transfer of a firearm between a parent and child or a grandparent and grandchild is exempt from the dealer transfer requirement. However, if the firearm is a handgun, you must submit an Report of Operation of Law or Intra-Familial Handgun Transaction PDF logo [PDF 481 kb / 2 pg] and $19 fee to the DOJ within 30 days. Assault weapons may not be transferred in this fashion. See Penal Code section 12285, subdivision (b).

I had the same question a few months back, sent off the form, still waiting to hear back.

Bobula has pointed you to the correct section to look for your answer directly from the DoJ.

It is currently taking the DOJ just over 60 days to process the Intrafamilial Transfers.

Lack of adequate DOJ processing does not infer illegality however.

The fact you *filed* (and were nonprohibited person with HSC card) is good enough.

Save copies of your filing, send certified mail too.

The only time where this transition might be an issue is if the recipient were illegally CCW'ing unpermitted, and where having the handgun being DROSed to him could result in reduced charges/penalties.
