    Dropped my ammunition?

The other day after buying some .45 Federal Champion ( I couldn't resist since it was so cheap ), I dropped a couple boxes on the ground. It sounded pretty bad. Flinched in horror.

So my newbie question is, is it safe to fire?

What should I check for when inspecting the ammunition?

I'm probably being careful, but I would rather ask than regret it later.

    Thanks.

The ammo is damaged beyond repair, but I'll pay shipping and you can send it over to me for disposal.

The ammo is fine. If ammo got damaged from dropping, US military would be in a lot of trouble.

Youll be fine, Just make sure the brass isnt cracked or dented, the projectiles arent sticking out, and the primers are still seated.

Worst case scenerio they will failure to feed, even with a dented case it probably wont cause a KB.

        Ah thanks!

I read a thread about someone dropping a loosely packed bag of ammunition and it exploded when the casing smacked into a primer. Kinda rattled my cage about dropping the stuff.

The chance you ruined any ammo you dropped is very slim. That is unless you dropped it off the third story of a building.

One note, some boxes don't have enough padding to sufficiently protect rounds from experiencing setback after a decent fall. (I'm looking at you Winchester with your crappy expanded polystyrene ammo holders.)

I've only really had setback issues with cheap factory 45acp, but it's something to check anyway.

They were most likely sitting inside of a tray inside of a cardboard box and the drop was probably way less than 5 feet.
The chances of damaging any rounds are pretty slim, IMHO.

I'd be willing to bet the same thing. But it doesn't hurt to compare a few of the dropped rounds with some undropped rounds just to make sure. I've seen smaller falls than 5 feet cause enough setback to make me not want to shoot the ammo involved.

Check for dent's or other damage. If it's ok, you're probably good to go.

I've dropped ammo...it's not the end of the world.

That was a bag of loose ammo and a total freak accident.

Ammo packed in it's factory box...

No... wait a minute... better send me that ruined ammo. I'll get rid of it for ya!

Dents in the casing is one of the smaller things to worry about. Set back is the thing that can cause a good day to go bad.

Center fire ammo is not sensitive to dropping 99.999 % of the time. Rimfire on the other hand could be ignited by dropping on a hard surface if it's done just right, or if stepped on.
