Need help on handgun ID

Hey people, I got this in a collection from my grandfather and havn't found any info on it. It's a 9mm with a 17 round clip. No markings on it I can read, I think it's Japanese from the text that is on it. Any ideas? Thanks

+1, thats what it looks like to me. though I am not sure if the nambu was actually 9mm

Ok, looks to me like it is a converted nambu. the original was a 8x22mm pistol, with an 8 round magazine.

Thats the confusing part. A Nambu is 8mm with 8 round mag. not a 9mm. It does look like a necked down 9mm. Are you sure of the caliber and mag cap?

Sorry typo, 7 round mag not 17. And it must be a 8mm if that's what they were produced as. Just looked big to me and the clip looks suited for 9mm rather than 8mm. Thanks for the help guys it must be nambu, not real up to date on old guns, give me a Glock. Any idea on value? May be up for sale.

As with any older gun, I'm sure value can vary greatly depending on condition, rarity, matching parts, etc. That being said, they seem to range from $400 to $1,200 on gunsamerica.com.

I believe the lettering says 'type 14' or something of that nature. I can only read the '14' part

It looks like the grips are non-original also- the original ones are grooved horizontally for grip.

Yep. The lettering says "type 14" just like the picture in the above link. I think it should say "14th Year Type/model" to be exact...

Nambu type 14 - 8mm - introduced in 1925 to replace and update model '04

used in manchuria and WWII one of first changes to it was enlarging of trigger guard for use of gloves.

Never real popular, it was expensive and somewhat unreliable.

prob worth about $300 - $400 now - check on gun auction sites, usually some for sale.

Is it just me or is that a blatant Luger ripoff? Can the Japanese please stop ripping off German designs?

Please. Don't insult the Luger, which actually works with a modern cartridge and is quite beautiful

I've heard the Type 14 was not bad *for a Japanese pistol*, as in it worked most of the time.. They had many worse designs.
