Actually, that is right for the most part. As far as the very well-known 'whispering chirp' heard in zillions of 70's & 80's films: 100% artificial (sound effects). And on centerfire pistols & rifles, it is still the sound of a muzzle report that you hear, but reduced in db and slightly muffled (hence the design of many, many units that are very similar to engine mufflers). However, there are some exceptions in the .22lr platform. I have used suppressors that had machined aluminum baffles based on a Joe Gadinni "Z" design - very superior - that made the sound of the action on a Ruger MKII the only thing audible. This was when using Remington Subsonics.

I hate you!!!Another misconception I'm seeing, or perhaps lack of experience is more accurate...
Weight
People keep saying "heavy". We're talking pistol cans here. Pistol cans aren't made of heavier materials like rifle suppressors. Most are made of Aluminum and in most cases a single Stainless blast baffle.
In this Video (my Video), the larger of the pistol cans shown is only 6oz. and that sounds heavier than it feels. It's 7in. in length and gives a 34db reduction average.
Now I'm going back to Facebook so I can still be amazed that you aren't Black.OCSD Approved CCW Instructor

I was always under the impression that you would have a better chance surviving an ambush or assault by pushing forward into fire rather that falling back... Unless you have a good defensive position or solid cover.
Just a base assumption though, I have no military training or anything else to back this theory up.
EDIT: And to at least add to the OP's topic, I feel that LEOs would havo too much of an issue carrying a sinensed firearm. As previously stated there is no need foe there firearms to be silent, in fact it is safer for the public for Police firearms to remain un-silenced, it at least gives civilians a chance to move out of the line of fire as well as inform other officers there is shooting taking place. Bullets are faster than radios.
Now a SWAT sharpshooter or assult operator may benefit from having a silenced firearm. It seems dangerous to me for Uniformed LEO's to have silenced firearms.Last edited by awall919; 11-17-2011, 12:05 AM.WTB: 3/8" dovetail(airgin/.22 size) rail to picatinny rail adapter or 3/8" rail size dovetail 1"'ringsComment

I say thank God for government waste. If government is doing bad things, it's only the waste that prevents the harm from being greater.

What kind of government do you guys got here? This is worse than California.

How would this be? When was the last shootout in Irvine? I can't remember one. The average cop NEVER fires his weapon in anger...so unless they're at the range without hearing protection a lot....it just can't be so. And from a single event the likely hood of LOSS of hearing is VERY slim.
