1911 CCO

I'm thinking about getting a 1911 CCO. The Colt was my first pick but they are near impossible to get nowadays. So a more realistic choice is either the S&W 1911 ES or the Sig 1911 RCS. I can get both for the same price. I like the looks of the Sig mostly because it doesn't have the front serrations like the S&W does. I know the Sig has a more squared off slide making holster selection a little more difficult. I've handled the S&W 1911 ES and was very impressed. What do the wise people of Calguns have to say about either of these two handguns.

for a CCO...my choice would be a Dan Wesson, although the Sigs and S&W's aren't slouches, from the 2 you've selected I would go with the S&W just as long as I could fondle it beforehand as the last S&W I picked up had some aesthetic problems even though it was new

The S&W would be my choice too. I haven't specifically shot the 1911ES, but I did have a chance to shoot the Gunsite version and was very impressed.

I used to own a S&W 1911Sc and it shot very well...it's new owner continues to be very happy with it

I wasn't aware of Kimber or Para making a CCO, which models?

You could be right - I was thinking some of their Commander-sized models had shorter grips - but they might not be as short as a CCO.

Edit: For the Kimber, I was thinking of the Compact Stainless II:

For the Para, I think you are right - I don't see any Commander-barreled models with an Officer's grip. Para seems to go the other direction - short barrels with larger grip frames.

After googling a bit about the Dan Wesson CCO, I saw the Guardian in 9mm. I know its not a CCO but that is one nice looking handgun. I'm gonna check to see if my gun guy can order this for me. If he can, I think I've found what I've been looking for.

Dan Wesson does it right - no big ugly billboard on the side of the slide - and they are beautiful pistols with all the features that really make sense - and they leave off the tacticool nonsense. FYI, here's a really good review on the 9mm Guardian:

My vote would be for a S&W. They have the external extractor which was a problem in Kimbers but the Smiths are very reliable. My brother has a 5" Sig which is very nice but has FTF problems on a regular basis. It went back to the factory and got it fixed. Don't know what they did but it works well now.

The external extractors on the S&W, Kimber and Sig are all very different in execution.

The extractor design of the S&W has been in successful use since the 50s...The new E-series is an improvement
