    Acceptable locks

Are the mandated locks that have to be sold with every gun required to be of a certain type?

Do they have to be key-locks or are combination locks ok?

CA DOJ has a list of acceptable locks. You would need to see if your lock is approved and has a receipt within 30 days.

If it is sold in CA as a 'gun lock', it has to be on the list of approved devices - so Walmart should work.

And remember, you don't have to keep the thing or use it; law says retailer can't release the gun to you unless you have both the lock and a receipt for it dated no more than 30 days ago when you pick up the gun.

Frozen in 2015, it is falling out of date and I can no longer edit the content. But much of it is still good!

Yeah, buy it at Walmart the day before, keep the receipt, don't open the package. Pick up your gun, return to Walmart, refund the lock. If you are so inclined.

Most guns come with locks, but not all are CA DOJ approved. I used a "safe affadavit" for one sale, though I had just purchased the safe two weeks before and had to bring in a receipt for that as well. I have so many locks now, and I can't reuse any of them for a pickup.

What about the free lock that police departments give out? Do they count?

I wondered about that also, mine from PD says "Never Sold" on the sides so how would you have a current reciept?
I did a purchase a handgun and on day of pickup I brought the free lock form the PD and still was requested to produce a receipt even though it indicated they were "free". I came prepared though with a current reciept from the FLIM FLAM Sporting Goods Store, that seemed to satisfy the requirment. Go to the office supply and get a Sales receipt book, make one out for the same lock everytime you need to, this law is total BS.

The "bought within the last 30 days" part is really stupid. I guess that is some sort of backhanded way to make sure you don't have 1 lock and 50 guns? IMHO, it shows just how little the lawmakers think of the citizens. Personal responsibility & accountability is a lost concept in CA.

I'll bet you wouldn't even need to buy a sales receipt book. You could probably just make an invoice in Excel from a random internet ecommerce site, and you would be good to go. For some reason, I have no ethical issues with circumventing laws that assume I am a negligent criminal. I wouldn't want to disappoint them.

Why can't I hand write a receipt for a free police department lock? Sold, one lock on 11-15-11 for $5.00 to Fred from John. No one says it has to come from a store right?

Steve you may want to reread my post below, that's what I'd do.
