Anyone else seen this? JHP ballistic tests with bone simulant.

I found these tests on brassfetcher.com. Pretty interesting stuff. They use 1/4" thick bone simulant and most JHP's fail to expand after going through it. Even some of the premium brands like Gold Dot and Ranger T. Interesting to note though that while there were failures to expand there were no problems with penetrating the bone...

As expensive as they are it looks like I might be switching to Corbon DPX in 9mm...

Interesting... wonder how this bone simulant compares to real rib cage bones? In the .40 S&W it looks like the bone just plugged the HPs...

Yeah good question. I think brassfetcher is a private ballistics testing company, so they would probably test whatever ammo they are paid to test and that's it. I mean it is kinda funny to see Aguila ammo tested like that...

But as far as I've always seen, Gold Dot is usually every bit as reliable as HST, and they failed to expand every time.

Yeah, DPX is also on Dr. Roberts' list of acceptable defensive handgun ammunition, in all three primary calibers. It's also light weight +P stuff, which would make Marshall/Sanow/Ayoob followers happy. Only thing is it's expensive stuff. Around $30 for a box of 20. OUCH!

If you can't find Cor-Bon DPX, look for anything that uses the Barnes-X bullet, as there are several manufacturers, including Federal, that are now using it. The prices are nuts, but if you're going to use it as primarily a defensive ammunition, you won't be shooting it much.

I saw .357 in a hunting package, I don't think they're marketing it as a defense round(likely because it would cut into sales of their own JHP defense ammo).

It looks like only Corbon is using the Barnes XPB bullet to any major extent...
There are only a select few calibers of Federal Vital Shock handgun ammo that use the XPB bullet, some from Double-Tap too... More brands are available with the Tac-XP bullet. Anyone know the difference between a XPB bullet and the Tac-XP bullet? Read on Glock forums that they're similar if not the same...

How much Gelatin do you have between your clothing and your breast plate I see hardly a point in doing that I would rather see some sort of clothing.

I agree partially with this. There is not much flesh between air and breastbone. I would rather have the bullet penetrate the bone THEN expand... which in my uneducated guess would be better than expanding on the bone and dumping that energy there. So I would like to see gelatin BEHIND the bone
