    Mags for Courses

mag capacity at a pistol course. Do people use full cap mags during these courses or do they maintain the 10rd limit? I feel like I know the answer but I don't want to be "that guy" at the class. If someone has run through a bunch and knows, PM me please. Thanks

in a class setting, i can't see why 10rd mags on a pistol would be a real problem... you'll just get more practice reloading (which is a good thing). i've taken several pistol courses now and have had no issues with the 10rd mags.

figure, people running 1911s in classes have 8 rounds usually (and thus reload a lot).

you'll be fine with CA-compliant mags, and arguably better off in the end with the extra muscle memory/reloading.

You're pretty much limited to CA compliant 10 round mags in classes except if you legally own them before the ban(ie pre-ban mags). Plus, its not like you'd have an advantage in a classroom setting based in CA with those mags as most likely instructors will have you speed/tactical reloading in between shots/stages so you're just gonna be dropping your pretty little 33 round hi cap mag in the dirt after 5 shots or so.

Use whatever mags you legally own.

for rifle, use whatever you legally own on a legally configured rifle.

There are going to be enough mag changes/ breaks to not worry about mag capacity. No disadvantage to those with 1911's either.

8 rd mags are fine. But you should probably carry at least 6 mags.

No pretty little 33rd hi cap mags dropping and I'm not trying to squeeze an advantage. I just don't own enough 10rd mags and instead of spending my income on bull****, I'd rather just use my others with the two 10rds I already have to complete the recommended number for the course. I'm not ignorant and know that instructors/students probably run 17rd mags in their Glocks, M&P's or XD's. Just trying to avoid spending extra cash. Thanks for your opinion but I was looking for info I didn't already know.

                This is the correct answer.

In reality, nobody really cares what you use- what they do care about is that you're not slowing down or hindering the class. Bring and use whatever RELIABLE magazines that you LEGALLY own.

Why are you worried about this if you legally own them?

I've always used my 'regular/hi capacity' magazines in addition to the 10 rounders I also have. I hate having to police magazines and dropping 5 or 6 ten rounders compared to 3 sixteen round magazines is just more hassle..

The only folks who look like dweebs in classes are the ones using mags that extend below the frame (20rd, 33rd, 10rd single stacks)

Most classes I've attended have you reloading between 6-8 rounds. using larger capacity mags only mean you be doing more tactical mag changes than speed changes.
The problem with using mixed capacity magazines is not ever knowing how many rounds you have left in the mag.

One thing I've learned is that it is a good idea to bring double the number of magazines they recommend...if they say 1 in the gun and 4 on the belt, I'd bring at least 10. I attended a class where another student brought 20 17rd mags for his G17

Disclaimer: I have a 1911 and shot local competition back in the 80s.

Obviously, use whatever is legal. I shoot 7 round mags, much to the frustration of my local gun shop since they are of the "more is better" attitude. I use 7 rounders because, and this is important, they are what I am comfortable with.

I have my reload sequence down to a certain procedure and fumbling with
different mags would throw me off.

btw, have fun with your classes!

If your class is in CA the class doesnt make you exempt from the law and the instructors should know the laws and work around them.

Now... If your using their rifles and they are registered AW or SBR's and they let you use them they that's a different story. But CA law is the law. Same if in any other state. Most classes dont usually have you load full mags anyways due to them teaching you to reload more and save your ammo.

In short pretty much exactly what Z said.
