HD ammo sa 1911

So my SA 1911 has been great with the fmj rounds I've been using but I bought some Winchester ranger +p jhp's with the intention of using them for HD. Well as is recommended by the community I did some reliability testing and got a considerable amount of ftf's with this ammo in just 50 rds (about 5 ftf)

so Looks like this round will not be seeing HD duty.

What other hd ammo do you guys recommend I try? would the non +p feed any differently?

some 1911's are finicky with JHP ammunition, try a few different ones to see what feeds best, any modern production JHP should do just fine for HD

Check out gold dots, they seemed to have the most "FMJ"ish profile.

What about Corbon Power Ball ammo. It has the expansion of a hp with the profile of an fmj.

I've heard only good things about Sabers. I have a few friends who tried those in there 1911's and it worked fine.

OP, since I use double stack stuff (Beretta/Sig/Glock), I have tried alot and find that Remington Ranger, Gold Dot and Federal shok stuff is pretty damn decent. Lately I've been using Ranger but 9mm I stick with the Gold Dot.

I use winchester ranger t's (ra45t) and they feed great in my mil-spec. I am using CMC and wilson mags though. The only failures I have had have been when releasing the slide with the slide release on a fresh mag when the gun is really dirty (100 rounds of cheap ammo). I found a review on the ranger t's and they seem pretty good for expansion as well. Look at golden sabres, gold dots, and the PDX1 as well. I think all of those have pretty rounded designs as well.

In my 45's, I simply use 230 FMJ ammo. My 1911's are just too finicky with JHP's.

Winchester PDX1 230gr work well in my SA1911 Loaded (and they sell them at Wallmart)

The only thing I hear about Golden Sabers that is vaguely negative is that you shold be careful to buy the bonded version...the non-bonded seems to be prone to separation. Other than that, they're apparently good at deep penetration--the brass jacket is "stiffer" than the usual copper, so the expansion takes longer.

Speer Gold Dots seem like the king of the hill to me--every review and test I've seen show them functioning flawlessly.

Powr Ball might be good for this situation... I hear its not as reliable as standard JHP when it comes to expansion, but if it's all that feeds reliably, it's probably better than FMJ for home defense.

Hornady Critical Defense might be one to look at, too. the opening at the end is pretty small, so it might feed well in a 1911.

I'll just reiterate that whatever works in my gun might not work in your gun......even if they're the same model. So try all different brands and don't settle until you find something that feeds reliably. Don't worry about printed ballistics....that's all marketing hype. Just find one that will come out the other end of the gun when you pull the trigger.

For my Kimber, I bought a bunch of different brands to try.
The Winchester Ranger RA45 worked the best, followed by the PDX1's.
Both Gold Dot and Golden Sabre would catch on the feedramp due to some sharp edges on the hollow point. I might have tried some other brands but I'm having a brain fade right now :P

I didn't try them, but I imagine the Hornady Critical Defense would work pretty well due to the little plug and narrow-looking tip.

I might just buy a few boxes here and there and keep testing until I get something that feeds reliably. I'll look into ordering all the stuff mentioned here.

lets hope I don't have to spend too much $$ to find one.
