Gun Grease??

What are the uses for gun grease? I got my brothers guns and cleaning stuff and see a tube in the kit. I usally use Breakfree. After shooting his Desert Eagle and upon breakdown of wepon I notice it was greased not oiled. So I am at a lost, do I regrease or oil....

Agree. It is almost an ease my mind sort of thing. I usually wipe off oil from the frame when I use it, and it just makes me feel like too much of it is running instead of lubing.

Adding grease wont that collect all kinds of crap on the gun when shooting it? When u clean the pistol or rifle dont u have to reapply the grease again?
Just curious. I never used grease on my rifle just some light oil when storing it.

I generally will use grease on a tight metal to metal friction points and use oil on thin/small moving parts. In the case of your desert eagle, it's best to use grease on every friction point including the moving parts in the bolt. The desert eagles have such a violent rotating gas system that the oil just gets blown out and weird malfunctions will occur. The previous owner of my DE used oil and it jammed frequently; cleaned and greased...problems went away. Oil is ok for many uses, but should not thought of as a "all-in-one".

If the grease is of any quality the carbon is suspended in it without any issue. Doesn't the same thing go for oil when you clean you gun? You will always have to re-apply lubricant when you are done. Most rifles don't require any grease, M1A and M1 Carbine would be an exception due to the heavy bolt, op rod and other moving parts. I always greased the crap out of mine when I had them and they ran smooth as silk.

Depends on what you're using it on, and where you're putting it.

Like GUNNTZ said, oil just got blasted out of a DE and they need something that stays put. Or on an M1, the weight of the parts and how they move against eachother.

Putting grease on the slide rails of a gun won't attract much crap. Putting it on the internals it might pick a little more up, but oil does the same thing really. Oil with a lot of crap built up in it also needs to be cleaned off and re-applied, so I don't understand why you think grease would be any different in that regard.

Look at your car. Some parts are greased, some are oiled. It just depends on what it is the parts are doing, and what the lubricant between them will be subjected to.

I use ballistol to clean and lube my 1911 then add tetra to the rails.

I oil my AR, but lately I've been greasing the BCG because I noticed that after a couple of weeks the oil drips off and it is hard to rack the AR. I keep the AR in the closet while I keep the pistol in the night stand so it would be nice if the AR was in ready to shoot condition just in case I need it. Since I've been greasing it, it is still lubed and ready to go after a month.

So now I grease the BCG and apply oil on the FCG.
