Just looked closely at mine and it appears to be broken. I say appears as I never checked it before. Is there supposed to be a catch which clips over the rim of the spent cartridge or is it just friction ejected. Mine has no catch at all just seems to be a small bar with a square end.

You have a broken extractor. There should be a catch like you described.
