1911 Malfunction

Hey guys so I took my dad's Charles Daly .45 to the range yesterday. After firing about 100 rounds we had numerous failure to feeds. The slide seemed to keep getting stuck on the casing.

I was shooting with 2 of the factory magazines and 230gr Winchester ammo.

I own a 9mm Beretta and I am not as familiar with the 1911. My question is...Is this a typical issue with this weapon? And if anybody has had this problem can you chime in on some potential solutions?

This is not a common problem with a properly working 1911 and quality ammo. I have 4 1911s (2 Kimbers, an S&W and a Dan Wesson). All get a lot of range time. Three are FTE-free and the 4th has had 3 FTEs, when I tried feeding it dirty Russian ammo.

Give the gun a thorough cleaning and see if it solves the problem. If not, try different ammo (stick with the brand names). Some auto-loaders simply don't like some ammo. It's also possible that you got a bad box of Winchesters - if the loads are a little light they might not cycle the slide fully every time. This isn't particularly likely, but it does happen and while Winchester is a brand name their white-box ammo it's particular top-shelf.

If it continues, take it to a gunsmith to have a look at it.

does it have an extended slide stop? if so, it could be you are probably touching it with your grip and affecting the slide action.

Gonna try and polish the feedramp first. Next time I take out I will check to see if my hand is interfering with the slide as well as check different ammo types.

So the pistol fired 100 rounds fine then quit feeding properly? Could be as simple as lack of lubrication, or a worn out recoil spring that wasn't up to the task as the pistol got hotter and tolerances closed up. No way to tell with the sparse information provided unfortunately.

Exactly what Redcliff said. Not really enough info to diagnose but... I would not try to go polishing your feed ramp if you have no experience doing it. Your extractor could also be too tight. Personally, I would have a smith polish feed ramp, breech face, and check extractor tension. These things would not take a lot of time to do, but would go a long way in increasing your guns ability to digest nearly anything you try to feed it.

It could also be a mag or ammo issue. I would say clean, then lube, then try again with some good factory ammo.
