Ok, so a vertical grip on an AR pistol is a no-no but how about a horizontal grip? Think of a vertical grip attached to the picanny rail on the side instead the bottom.

Kind of like on a Sten?

EDIT: Just saw AR PISTOL. That's a no-no.Last edited by ChrisTKHarris; 10-12-2011, 6:09 PM.Don't let the name fool you... -
Just saw it was in reference to an AR PISTOL. I believe it refers to any sort of grip, not necessarily a vertical grip. I know there was a big hoopla about the angled foregrip, but because it wasn't technically a grip it was legal.Don't let the name fool you...Comment

How about a monopod
?
This may sound strange and unbelievable to you, but it is real and true.

The AFG does not cause a handgun to become an AOW, but it's use on a featureless rifle is not recommended.- Rich

ATF classifies pistols and handguns as being designed to be held and fired with one hand. The reason vertical foreward grips are illegal -- requiring registration as an AOW -- is because you now have a weapon designed to be held and fired with two hands, which means it's not a pistol. It's obviously not a rifle or short barrel rifle because it doesn't have a stock. It's an Any Other Weapon. UNLESS it's 26" or longer in overall length, in which case it's just a "firearm" and it's legal with the ATF with no special paperwork or fees. That's why the XO-26 from Franklin Armory is fine. Feds call it a firearm, CA calls it a pistol.
I feel that a horizontal one would violate this same principal.
...however, you could mount a bipod on the front that could be grabbed. Since it is a bipod, it's legal. You can grip it, you just can't put it on intending to use it as a grip...Last edited by JeremyS; 10-12-2011, 6:58 PM.Comment

Is there a "bipod" that's shaped or has the thickness to be held like a forward grip?Comment

Keep in mind that if it was also designed to actually function as a forward grip, it would be illegal. You would have to put something on the front that was designed and marketed for another purpose.Originally posted by Write WingerIs there a "bipod" that's shaped or has the thickness to be held like a forward grip?Comment
