    Ruger Security Six Test

Does anyone know if there is a firing range in LA area that has a Ruger Security Six available to test out?

Oh, I didn't know. Well does anyone out there own one? If so, how does it shoot?

      I own a 6" Security Six.

Not as refined as my S&W 19, but it is still a great shooter.

I own one in stainless and I love it. I'm no gun expert, but it's well constructed, very nice looking (imho), a solid performer, more accurate than I am. It's one of my favorite firearms. But that's just one non-expert person's opinion.

I own 2 but 1 is unfired. The one I have fired is the most accurate six gun I own and I own a lot of six guns. I wear this every deer season in CA.

I have a 4" stainless Security Six...it's very accurate, but not my most accurate gun (at least in my hands), but out of all my DA's, it has the best trigger...if you want to try something comparable try a GP100, but usually the triggers aren't as good

I own a blued 4" Security Six. It's a fantastic revolver. I also owned Ruger GP 100, but trade it off and kept the SS. I like it's balance better than GP.

Best wheelgun Ruger ever made IMHO. But I doubt there are any on range rental lines anymore.

I still own a Speed Six in .38 Special. This is the fixed sight version of the Security Six. Sadly, I sold the security Six to buy the GP100 about 20 years ago. I wish I had kept it.
Yes, they are great guns. The Speed Six has been my 'Nightstand Gun' for way over a decade. I keep it loaded with .38 +P JHP's.
Just curious, why do you want to rent this specific model?

Thanks for all the input! It seems that the GP100 is the modern version of the security six, I will keep an eye out for one then.

I own several Security Sixes (all three barrel lengths) and wouldn't trade any of them for a dozen GP models. The wood grips were mostly crap except for the target grade ones, but otherwise, the model was far superior to the new GP series. Triggers are better, accuracy on all of mine is excellent and with Pachmayr grips added you can't beat them. Built like an anvil, but doesn't FEEL like one in your hand (the GP kinda does in comparison). FYI, It was introduced mainly for the purpose of capturing police market share away from Smith and Colt (Remember the 70's when every cop you saw carried a 357?). They really made it right, because they knew that was the only way they were going to break into that market. Ruger stopped making the Security Six line in the late 80's not because they ever had a problem with sales. The problem was they couldn't make it that way and sell it profitably. The corporate bottom line demanded a replacement that was cheaper to build. Hence the GP100. If you find a Security Six that has cylinder gap within spec, no damage to the forcing cone, etc. BUY IT!
9mm and 45acp are equally lousy. There's not a dime's worth of difference in REAL terminal ballistics. Get over it.

I've owned my SS 6" since 1987 and have no plans on parting with it.

You are just a few years too late. When I worked at Agoura Target Range, we had a rental security six. But, we closed our doors about three years ago. I'm not sure but, you might want to call Oaktree and ask them if they have one.

If you have a chance to pick up a Security Six for a good price, I highly recommend it

Absodamnlutely! I have a Security Six w/4" bbl I've owned and shot regularly since 1975. It is the only Ruger revolver I've ever owned I consider to be an equal to my S&W's. I'd very much like to get ahold of one or two more -- especially a 3" model.
