9mm shell blowout

Just came back from the range and we had an interesting failure. My daughter was shooting her Beretta and suddenly it was smoking and she had powder on her hand. I pulled out the mag and cleared the chamber with a lot of work as it was jammed. Out came two pieces. The shell blew out the back. We inspected the gun, loaded the mag and it shot fine the rest of the day.

My question is, has anyone else had this happen? Experiences?

These are Miwall factory reloads.

I dont want to hear, thats what you get for running reloads. I know that there is a risk with them. Just wondering if anyone has seen this happen before. We have only been shooting for 4 months or so.

So the gun and magazine were fine? Go buy a lottery ticket, quick. I have never seen a case failure that bad that did not damage the gun. Call Miwall and send back the entire lot of ammo. Sammy

Looks like the case was weak and signs of weakness were not caught. Could be an over charge just like zfields said, it doesn't take much on some cases. Commercial reloads will never be like a hand-loader, crap slips through.

My guess is it fired out of battery, but like what zfields said, could be other reasons also, it's hard to say.

It sounds like you already know the risks in shooting reloads and don't need a lecture, but personally I wouldn't buy anything from them again. It could have been a lot worse. I wouldn't let my kids shoot reloads that I didn't reload myself.

This was on the bottom of a stack of 1000 rounds. We've already shot at least 900 out of the case.

It appears to be flawed brass to me. In my experience when a round goes off out of battery you know. There would have been a large flash and I would expect to see more damage on the side of the case while the bottom remained intact.

Ehhh I guess bullet setback is another possibility if it was at the bottom of a box (assuming stacked flats)? I've come across some bad examples before.

you are one lucky person that it didn't damage the gun. i've stopped getting miwall myself. don't like it now that i can reload my own

Most likely cause is highlighted. It happens, even in new factory ammo from time to time. No QC is 100% in a high volume operation and a weakened case can slip through.

Beretta's are pretty robust. In fact they usually fare better than a lot of other closed slide pistols.
