Just picked up a model 66

The model 66 4 inch barrel I just bought has a 10 day wait going but I found an absolute good condition one for a good price! I tried the DA and SA trigger, absolutely a dream! I'm looking for some speedloaders and a pair of rubber grips and holster that fit this. First revolver guys, what you think?

I feel terrible! I was so excited at the condition and price that I didnt take any :/. It was easily 90 percent, I checked the forcing cone and lock up and trigger and it seemed great. I started researching too, its interesting because the sights didnt have the orange tip but actually looked all stainless which I'm told is rare?

I have a set of older Pachmayr Presentation rubber grips for a square butt K-frame in very nice condition for sale---these do not have the Pachmayr mediations and are harder to find---$25 shipped or FTF.

I haven't seen those before, I prefer non finger grooves though. I'm just browsing around since the wood ones are not my thing.

You will love shooting that gun. For grips, I'd recommend Hogue monogrips. For speedloaders, go with Safairland. Lots of folks like HKS (and I used them in the academy back in the Stone Age) but I since learned that Safariland cuts one motion from the equation (twisting the knob). Either one will probably serve you well if you practice with them. K-Frame Smiths are great !! You did good.

Yea, for my past 2 guns the monogrips by Hogue was awesome since it offered no finger grooves. I have an HKS but its for the wrong frame size. Do any of the holsters only offer a button snap or retention button like on a blackhawk? I'm looking for that.

                    Model 19/66 are fine revolvers. I've got a 66-2 4" and it's a joy to shoot.
Feels much, much more 'refined' than my sp101 3".

You did well and will enjoy it for years.

They had a Ruger sp101 in there too! I picked it up after buying the Smith and was surprised. It wasnt bad, quite light and quite handy but the trigger was not even close to the Smith. I didnt mind anything else though. I loved the Smith, its like art .

The first M66s had no Red Ramp (RR) and bare stainless rear sight. S&W soon found out that shooters hated these as they are hard to pick up.

I'm not aware of any solid cutoff date/SN for switching to RR front and blackened stainless rear, but yes, the bare stainless rear sights are somewhat rare and sought after by some. They're probably more rare because many shooters switched the rear sight leaf & tossed the originals.

The change, BTW, was not an "Engineering Change" so didn't warrant a dash number change. There are M66 no dashes with the RR/blackened stainless sights.

This is my early no dash. BTW, give some thought to that rubber grips thing. Unless you're wanting to use it with speedloaders that is. If you switch, stash the originals in a safe place.

i prefer the wood grips..Mine from 1975? ish. Unfired. Got it off a LA County Deputy Sheriff. He was issued it and decided to go with something else.

They are great guns...I generally prefer the larger (N-frame) revolvers, but my 66 "no-dash" will be one of the last guns I sell..

These great old stainless guns deserve some wood -- if you don't like the factory grips, get a pair of Ahrends "Retro Combats". You won't be sorry...

I like the model 66 very much and have 3 of them. I especially like the shorter barrels. It may be the best revolver S&W ever made.
