I would like some advice as to which of the three black Bear Coats you would choose for your 1911. I thought of Nitrocarburizing (Black Nitride from H&M) them but want to try out the Bear Coat.
I am finishing up some work on two 1911's that I own. They both have stainless steel frames and slides. I was also planning on having a Les Baer Custom Carry that I will be purchasing this month sent to have the Bear Coat added after I fire a few thousand rounds through it. I know that up until recently Les Baer was using their Bear Coating process on a few of their lines like the SRP before they decided to do it in house.
The Bear Coat is offered in:
Tactical Flat Black
Matte Black
Satin Black
Tactical Flat Black:
Proven to be the toughest, most abrasive resistant, chemical resistant, flat black finish available in the U.S.A.
This IS the finish used on the FBI contract rifles built by H.S. Precision. It is available from H.S. Precision on all their fine rifle line.
We are proud to make this New DuPont TEFLON-S finish available nationwide to the public effective Jan. 1, 2005 .
NO Other finish available in the USA passed the series of tests conducted to meet the stringent requirements of the FBI contract.........NONE !
Matte BLACK :
Our most popular finish. Dark black with a slight matte sheen, it offers great lubricity and wear .
SATIN BLACK:
This Premium finish has a slight sheen to it and looks similar to blueing. Best suited for pistols and machineguns. Has a slight charcoal tint to it and is very similar to the original HK baked epoxy finish .
The price per pistol is $200 to have this process done. From my understanding ALL three colors should offer the same level of toughness, lubricity, corrosion and wear resistance. Does anyone know if that is true or not? Which one of the colors do you like best on your 1911? I was leaning towards the Tactical Flat Black. I would like to see if anyone has any of the black colors on their 1911 and is willing to post a picture.
I like how nitrocarburizing looks, feels, and functions and would do it again on my other carry guns. I just want to try something different. I am not sure but it seems like the Bear Coat would be more self lubricating than the Black Nitride since the Bear Coat is a teflon finish developed by Dupont.
