rusty woes colt .357

My dad gave me his guns, and he never took care of them. The colt sat in the garage in the soft case. It was fairly rusted and pitted. Me and a buddy tried #0000 steel wool with wd40, gun cleaner/oil. We got the rusty brown splotches off, but it left blackish pits where all the brown use to be. Any ideas? Would a gun smith be able to make it look decent I know it would still have some pitting.
Oh by the way its a colt trooper III stainless, and its about 30 years old

Also tried brass brush. Any idea what a gun guy would charge?

Send it to COLT for a bead blast finish. If they are willing to take it, their shop prices are reasonable and the work is second to none

Use some FrogLube

FrogLube will dissolve the rust and renew the weapon to useful condition. It will not remove the pitting but it will make the gun serviceable without having to send it off to a gunsmith.

I would recommend removing the grips and soaking all of the metal parts with FrogLube. Use a hair dryer or put the gun in the sun for a couple of hours, with FrogLube on it.

Repeat the process a couple of times and you will see a difference in the gun. If you are not happy, you can still send it off to gunsmith, but you may not need to.

A really good gunsmith can bring it back to life, I've seen pics of REALLY REALLY pitted pistols get brought back to looking new.
