Sig grips

hey guys!

I'm new to the Sig world and looking for some much needed info from experienced sig owners. I have a beautiful early 90's sig P220 in jail right now and to keep my mind off of it I was thinking of different upgrades i can do to it when i pick it up next thursday. First was grips, I'm wanting the Houge finger grove grips but when i did a little research some people had problems with the grips installed and some didnt have issues. So my question is, will the houge grips cause a problem? Also the night sights will need to be replaced, should I go with the Siglite? or a different brand? and why? Are there any other "improvements" i should look into? and why? I know out the box the sig P220 performs well. any USEFUL input will be appreciated. thanks!

Shoot it first, the factory grips may work for you....i have a early 220 and a 229 with factory grips that work fine...i have a 220R and 226R with CT's that work well but i would not have changed them if not for the laser.

I have had good results with Trijicons, i recently used a set of Metrop's on a USP ....I dont have enough saddle time with them but not warm and fuzzy ....the Sig's work well.

It has the newer p220 grips on it now, and it will work but I would rather have the houge finger grip if it will work without a problem.

Try the Hogue rubber panels. They are excellent grips and don't cost an arm and a leg. I just don't care for finger grooves. I believe there are different versions of Hogue grips: one for older P220s and newer P220s.

Lately I have been eyeing Hogue G10 Piranha grips. They look great and are grippy.

I put the Hogue grips on mine and kept it this way for about 5000 rounds. Eventually I switched back to factory stock grips and then got the slimmer factory 220 plastic grips. IMO, the Hogue grips made the gun feel just a bit too wide and I have medium to large hands. Honestly, save your money on upgrades and spend it on a training class. Hold off on sights. Not saying to never upgrade them but I'd take some training and get a better idea of what you want/need in your sights. For self-defense pistols. I eventually went with XS sights but there were several other sights along the way. Had I taken a class or two first, I would have probably skipped a few of them along the way. Also, by waiting, you will likely get to try other folk's firearms with different sights.

a set of factory plastic checkered grips on your old P220 is the "signature" of the older P series Sig; sort of like the hood ornament on an old Mercedes... and more....

i have always found the factory plastic checkered grips to be very comfortable on my P series Sigs. i have the original optional factory wood grips as well... and they are great if you want to add beauty, and bulk up the grip size. they look identical to the plastic grips, but are wood rather than plastic. i put the wood grips on, admire the look... and then put my plastic checkered grips back on.

bottom line is... i wouldn't replace the grips until after shooting the gun; if you do choose to go with another set of grips... don't discard the ones the factory put on. they are obsolete and no longer manufactured. they have some value and in mint condition can command up to $70.00, and sometimes more on internet auctions.
there are 2 numbers located on the underside of the factory plastic grips (they sit side by side)... that indicates the year the grips were manufactured in. so a "92" would indicate your grips were manufactured in 1992. it is not unheard of for the factory to have installed grips that were manufactured in a different year than the gun they were mounted on.

i've always used Trijicon 3 dot night sights on my Sigs; high quality. i have however, been considering the Heinie Straight 8 setup and the Trijicon HD offering; to enhance and speed up sight acquisiton.

i'd suggest you try an older P220 with original grips, and if you like them... buy some from the secondary market; ebay, Gunbroker, forum.

thanks guys for the info. The original owner also thew in the original checkered grips. I will try them out after I get the sig out of jail before I buy the houge grips
