what gen is my glock?

I am thinking about picking up a used G27 from one of my dads friends but he doesnt know what gen it is so I was wondering if there is any way i could tell. He says he bought it in 01' is there any way to read the serial number and figure it out kind of like a vin on a car?

Its probably 3rd gen based on a 2001 purchase date (late 90's the 3rd gens were released I believe), but you can tell what gen any Glock is just by looking at it, which is why pics would be helpful. No need to ever check the S/N for that.

The 3rd gen got finger grooves on the grip, and later versions got a weak *** chamber load indicator. Those would be the first things I'd look for.

Note that the Glock 27 doesn't have a rail, even the 3rd gen version.
