    Bought my first 1911 today

A few months ago I took a three day pistol course in Colorado and trained with a 1911. I really love the gun, but didn't own one myself. Today I bought a Colt Commander, and am looking forward to customizing it and making it my own. I contemplated going with a higher end 1911 right off the shelf such as a Nighthawk or Ed Brown, but because I have some friends in Colorado who are high end gunsmiths, I decided I'd rather buy a base model Colt and then have them customize it for me. I'll be sure to post before/after pictures when it's all said and done, but damn if it doesn't feel good to be the proud owner of an American classic.

I didn't forget. There's this little thing in the state of California where they make you wait ten days before you can pickup the gun. Pictures to come.

If you really want to make it your own... do your own work I picked up a cheap RIA, polished all the internals, made a good shooter to a great shooter.

If your friend is in Grand Junction how about you send him my Springfield first so you can get an idea of what you want him to do to your Colt? It's safer for your Colt that way, sort've a "measure twice, cut once" thing. I'll pay for the work, you use your connections to get me to the front of the list and a good rate.

Yeah I can respect that, but I'm not so sure practicing my gunsmithing on a Colt is the smartest thing todo. I'd rather pay someone to do it right the first time. Besides, I'm too damn busy. The work would never get done.

Congrats on the new purchase. Why did you get a commander instead of the government? Do you CCW?

Congrats on the Colt. I love mine as well. Post pics...Looking at Colt and looking at a SA made me angry...Seeing Brazil on the 1911 made me laugh and then want to take a heavy wrench to the thing. Same position as you...Thing I am considering is polishing and getting a magwell with backstrap or whatever it is called in the 1911 world. I need more time to get terms down.

Thank you. I don't have a carry license no, as I am in Los Angles, but that didn't really factor into my decision. If I was to carry the width of the gun is more important than the length because that has more of an impact on concealability. The 1911 is a very slim gun.

Ultimately I decided with the commander just because I like the size. For me this is a home defense weapon, and one that I plan on customizing quite a bit. I wanted to start that process with something pretty basic, and knew I couldn't go wrong with a Colt.
