    RELOADING QUESTION

I recently bought a progressive reloader and accessaries. One of the items is a tumbler for cleaning my brass.

My question is does it matter whether or not the cases prior to tumbling have been deprimed or not.

I have seen videos of guys tumbling cases that still have the primers and my tumbler's instructions say to deprime them first.

It would save me time if I didn't have to, but I want to do it the right way.

Doesn't matter, it'll just be easier if you tumble before you deprime, otherwise you'll have to pick out any small pieces of tumbling media that get jammed in the flash hole.

      i dont de-prime first.

why, because the tumbling media corncob or walnut get stuck in the primer pocket flash hole and i dont want to poke it out of 100s of cases when i can just use my press with my de-priming die.

Dont you just have to tumble it again to get the case lube off?

If you want to deprime first use a depriming die , do not use your full length die . One purpose of cleaning is to keep the crud out of the dies and scratching them and then a scratched die will transfeer marks to the brass that follows.

most people are using carbide dies, so no case lube needed.

No tumbler just cleans your brass to clean gunk so it doesn't get stuck or put gunk in your press and makes them look pretty also degunks it so your rifle doesn't get the gunk.

I deprime before tumbling all the time. Helps clean the primer pocked. Sometimes media get in the hole but usually it's fine.

I worry more about the scratching of my dies then the gunk : )

I also deprime first, I like clean pockets. I leave a deprime/resize die on when it hits my progressive, cleans the flash hole out just fine before it gets primed.

I deprime 1st too,yes its a pain to get the media out,but cleans the pockes. I never use lube on any pistol cartridges, just rifles (especially tapered case rounds like 30 carbine)

I don't deprime before I tumble. I use to but I saw very little pocket crud actually being cleaned out after a 4-6 hour tumble. I spent more time poking out crumbs from the flash hole as I did just giving each pocket a quick twist from my tool IF it needed it. I normally don't clean the pocket unless it needs it. I'm lazy with my pistol and 223 reloads.

                        I tumble, then de-prime.

depends on what type of case i am doing, but i would say 99% of the time i dont re tumble after f/l sizing, i only add enough lube to the case to make them not stick in the die, for rifle cases. pistol cases i dont lube.

""I use to but I saw very little pocket crud actually being cleaned out after a 4-6 hour tumble""

same with me, even over night it still has crap in the pocket, so i just made a eclectic pocket cleaner with a wire brush on it, and i only do this on rifle cases .308, 30-06, .300 rum ect and long term ammo that will sit for awhile.

thinking about getting SS media so i can bypass these steps.
