I'm 44, and been needing bi-focals for 3 years, but I keep fighting it.

BEST advice? 2 MOA dot Aimpoint sights. Smaller the dot, smaller the BLOOM with astigmatism.

Much like you guys. I have astigmatism, slow focusing eyes, dry eyes, as well being too dam old.
I wear blended bi-focal progressive glasses every day.

Yet those fine 400 dollar glasses ain't for sheeeit when it comes to shooting iron sights on pistol or rifle. (or threading a needle for that matter)

        SO....
I found out if the lens grinder adds some PRISM to the lenses. I can see as well as I could 10 - 15 years ago. Made a HUGE difference for me.

Ask your optometrist if it might work for you. The difference is amazing.

The way I understand the prism effect is this. The prism brings in more light and more data to the center of the eye. Thus you can see better. All I know is it works for me.

Maybe the eye guy from Humboldt can tell us how the prism effect really works.

        Cheers,

I had a pair of shooting glasses made by my optomi...optomi...eye doctor.

Petite Chinese woman...eyes went wide when I told her I needed shooting glasses. To her credit, she was pretty professional about it, asking me how I shoot different types of guns, etc. I also had them yellow tinted to bring in more light and she changed the focal point of my normal prescription.

I've used them several times already and they work great!

          Just talk to the doctor.

We have some hobbies in common with our doctor, so our appointments are like an eye exam while talking about what interesting adventures we each have been on lately. Turns out I'm not the first shooter he's helped with this. It sounded like he's dealt with more than a few cops with similar issues.

Yes it will happen to all of us.......

Yes it will happen to all of us.......some more than others especially is you have astigmatism. I where tri-focals.

I use a high contrast front sight of some type, fiber optic, painted, white dot, etc. I can find the front sight faster in my tri-focal lenses. I also had a pair of shooting glasses made with the bi-focal set to approximate front sight distance.

I shoot weaver and adjust the distance of my grip and stance so that the front sight is sharp.

Getting old is lousy but beats the alternative.

That must be my problem then

I should ask my friends who run the local range where they go. I could use a more "understanding" doc.

I'm 57 years old, and I have problems using 3-dot pistol sights, even with my reading glasses.

I recently switched to a plain black rear sight on my 1911, with a gold bead front sight. This combination is a lot easier for me to use, and within 15 yards I can shoot accurately without my glasses if necessary.

For open sights I use a Merit disk over my progressive lenses, with an occluder on my non-dominant eye.

More and more of my handguns are getting a red dot on them these days though. It's so very much easier to shoot with than open sights, even with all my various shooting aids. I use the standard 30mm UltraDot 4MOA version. Here's one of my K38's:

Sigh.. the old aging eyes..... Yep just got new bifocals that are messing with my sighting in badly. I've just got to train myself where to look now down the barrel which is a PITA! I think I might try going back to my old prescription for shooting and leave the bifocals for everything else.

Turned 53 a few days ago and have been waring tri-focals for about 4 years. What's worst is I used to be right eye dominate but am now left eye dominate. Can't catch a break. As a matter of fact I can't even catch anymore.
I really need to see about getting a set of purpose glasses. Pistol is hard to be spot on, but with my scoped AR I can shoot fine with or without my glasses on.

What do you guys do with contacts if anything?

I haven't worn glasses in like forty years and only have a pair for emergency purposes.

                            Maybe surgical remedies?

I wear monovision contacts right now. My glasses are progressive lenses. I have started leaving my contacts out and wearing the glasses at the range. Neither choice is perfect.
