    A Hypothetical Question

Hypothetically speaking, say a person owned a USP 45 Tactical before they moved to Kalifornia and say that in order to prevent from being a bad person, they removed the offensive threaded barrel from the gun, but now wanted to shoot the gun (seeing as how there really is no collector value in the gun and thus no reason to keep it virgin). Should they:

    1) buy a regular HK USP 45 barrel?
    2) buy a Jarvis HK USP barrel with a compensator?
    3) buy some other sort of barrel?

What have other people done or would they do if they were in the same Hypothetical situation?

Given, as you say, the lack of collector value of such a gun, a person finding himself in this situation could just have a smith turn the existing threads off the barrel. If he ever returned to a free state he could always get another threaded barrel.

Otherwise just order a Jarvis (or Bar-Sto?) HK bbl without threads.

So hypothetically, what barrel would you get? It looks like the Jarvis barrels have the O-rings?

Personally, I'd buy an additional HK Tactical barrel and turn down the threads.

I'd get an aftermarket o-ring barrel in stainless. The normal rifling is lead bullet friendly too.

I am not exactly sure of the design of that barrel or where the threads may fall; I only know it by compariosn the a SOCOM Mark 23, so if I am in error by recollections, excuse my dust.

            However, my suggestion...

Instead of turning/machining down the threads, what about a simpler fix? Why not find some sort of matching compensator and do what DOJ suggested/recommended Walther do on those P22s. Use Red Loc-Tite on the threads and install some sort of compensator or muzzle-brake? Voila! No need to see a gun-smith, you get to keep the o-ring fitted barrel, and you can still take advantage of having something on the end of the gun to improve accuracy. It seemed to be OK with DOJ/BOF on the P22, why not apply it to this? You could even buy a replacement Tactical barrel, to retain the o-ring feature, do the same, and set the original barrel aside for posterity. Maybe some other California bloke might be selling a used Tactical barrel on Gunbroker, who has the same problem, but has not thought it through!

            .

I would pick option (4) and keep my threads. Funny how some threads on a piece of metal are illegal, and if you ran your car or motorcycle without a suppressor it would be illegal.

                Umm, bye.

Would HK 45 Expert barrel work? I don't recall if they are the same length...

No, the expert slide is longer than the tactical, so the O-ring location is different.
