    1911 vs Reloads

    Quick questions:

For anyone that owns a 1911 mainly a Nighthawk, Dan Wesson, Ed Brown, etc (Higher end 1911s)... would you use factory reloads or just straight factory brandnew. I hear 1911 will pretty much shoot anything with no issues.

My dilemma is I just got my first 1911 (Springfield MC Operator) I want to take care of it and shoot brandnew ammo which I did for the first 500rds, but this can get expensive fast. I have tons of factory reloads but hesitate to feed them in, afraid it might disrupt the force of my 1911. Well in know what I mean, any feedback would be appreciated!

    Thanks

I have a Nighthawk T3, a Wilson CQB, and various Kimbers and Colts.

I shoot reloads through them all - primarily 230gr and 185gr lead round nose and flat points. Very rarely do I have any problems, and where I do it's always an obvious fault I have made in the reloads.

    Go for it.

It has been many years since i have bought factory centerfire ammuntion , I have shot tons on my reloads . I could not shoot as much as i do if i did not reload . before i reloaded i shot some commercial reloads and had some bad experiances (squibs). I have heard there are some trustworthy commercial reloaders these days but none that i could recommend. In other words i suggest you reload your own, then you should know what you have

I've fired tens of thousands of rounds of my own reloads without drama through various of my 1911s (including Les Baers and Nighthawks). I've also never had problems with similar quantities of ammunition from the well known makers.

However, I have run across "factory reloads" that were wildly out of spec and troublesome.

The thing is that "factory reload" covers a lot of ground -- from stuff made in someone's garage and of highly variable quality to Black Hills re-manufactured ammo that is of excellent quality.

Good quality, in spec ammunition should be just fine in a good 1911. The problem is that not all ammunition that falls in the "factory reload" category is good quality, in spec.

As long as they're not something insane and from a source you trust, I say go for it.

          Or load your own...

I would much rather shoot my own reloads than factory reloads. That's just me. I've found most brands of factory reloads that I've shot to vary quite a bit in charge and/or oal. Maybe your results will be better than mine.

I shoot nothing but reloads in my 1911's. I won't shoot any but my own however. I don't trust them. The only ammo I ever had feeding problems with were some reloads from Midway. Got a squib in there too...think I'd purchased 500 rounds, maybe more.

230 grain hardball of almost any kind will cycle perfectly well. Its the lighter rounds and flat/hollow points that can give you trouble in a good 1911.
I don't shoot because I like guns, I shoot because I hate paper.

Right on gang! Thanks for the feedback, I don't reload myself yet (don't have the space and money yet) I do shoot the factory reloads from reputable dealers. Much appreciated!

1911's are generally rated for +P+, good reloads are no problem

You think 1911 competition shooters are shooting factory ammo? Hell no.

If your reloads were loaded properly, you have nothing to worry about.

This. I trust my own reload very much. As a matter of fact my 1911's run better with my reloads than factory ammo.

I shoot handloads with LSWC and my Operator has had no issues. So far it has shot everything I have thrown at it and I have shot alot of random bottom of the barrel ammo through it at one point of another.
