    9mm Kimber *final report*

8-12-2011 Final Update further down in thread. Mag problems solved:

7-31-11 took the Kimber Stainless Target II 9mm to range again today.

Fired 150 rds. of Independence 115 FMJ, Magtech 115 FMJ, and Fiocchi 115 FMJ. Ran the gun very wet with Break Free CLP, installed new factory slide stop.

This time no failures to lock slide on last round, No FTF or FTE at all. So I think that was the problem. I will keep the 12lb. recoil spring but still will install the Wolf magazine springs.

Ordered a fiber optic front sight from Midway and will install that when it arrives. Very happy kimber owner. Shot it at 15 yards was maintaing 1.5 in groups.

Update: 7-29-11 Today was my second range trip ran another 300 rounds of factory Ammo.
No FTF or FTE but still some failures to lock back after last round. Specifically with S&B 115 and 124g ammo and the PMC ammo every mag. A few times with the 115g FMJ Independence Ammo, No times with my 20 year old Winchester 147g Sub Sonic Hollow points or 124g Nato.

I ran only CLP in it. I was using the stock 12lb. recoil spring I have a 10 and 11lb. I could try next time. I also have 8lb. magazine springs I could substitute for the 7lb. factory springs. (I'm using 2 Kimber and 3 Mec-Gar magazines). Really didn't want to spend the $ for Wilson mags. I also have a spare factory slide stop. I installed that when I cleaned her after the range.

I think I'll install an 11lb. recoil spring, new slide stop, and the 8lb. mag. springs. It's not like my life is depending on it, not using it for self defense only casual target shooting. I also checked the timing on the Schwartz lever, not dragging on the slide and in time with trigger.

Probably will call Kimber on Monday just to get their ideas, any ideas or suggestions appreciated.

7-25-11May the Schwartz be with you.. or my New Kimber.

Finally got the new Kimber 9mm to the range, and it shot nice. Shot 150 rounds of factory loads, 100 Independence 115 g. FMJ and 50 rds. of Lawman 125 g. FMJ.

3 stove pipes in the first 5 magazines (2 Kimber, and 3 Mec-Gar) all on the kimbers, then no more. About 5 times the slide failed to lock back on last round, did it on both magazines brands. That went away as I shot more. Gun seems very tight.

Also shot my Colt 1991 .45 and my Springfield Mil-spec. .38 Super, no FTF or FTE or problems on these. I ran slide glide in all 3 guns, may just run Break Free CLP next time.

I will shoot some more on Wednesday. I will bring some Independence and American Eagle FMJ loads in both 115 and 124 g., and also a box of Spear Gold Dot HP's. to try out.

Seems like it just needs some breaking in.

Nice Pistol, give it some time.. Fail to lock back & stovepipes say slide is a little slow (tight).. Run it wet for awhile and let her rip... Have Fun....

I'm glad you didn't I've been looking for one for a while!

This is my 1st. 100 rds. when I was just getting the feel of the gun. I think things will tighten up as I get used to it. This is at 10 yards. The flyers were from the 1st couple of magazines, then I started to get a feel for it. I have a tendency to get a death grip on the gun.

I have to add I'm 63 years old and where tri-focals. It's a real challenge get the front sight in focus and not loose my sight picture. It's hell getting old but I guess it beats the alternative. I still have fun shooting though.

Lose the Slide Glide and the failures will go away. A tight, full size steel 1911 cycling factory 9mm is a tall order. Add a thicker than grease product to the moving parts and you are asking for trouble. CLP or what I like is Mobile 1 5-30. Works great. CLP might be better for a 1911 break-in.

On the 9mm Kimbers just make sure the extractor channel is clean. I have not owned one but several shooters here have found that problems prop up if it is not cleaned. The older 9mm Kimbers breachface was cut for the .40 S&W which might or might not have casued problems. Saves the company money making slides one way for 2 calibers, even if it is not the correct way to do it. Hopefully they cut them just for the 9mm round in the newer ones.

Good luck and report back!! Sammy

Try it in the above stated flavor - 9mm out of a steel frame is butter -
