    new handgun ower

hello all, i am new to this forum and am looking for a reliable, accurate and attractive pistol. i would like to hear your thoughts and opinions about what would be a good first gun. i have shot a glock and didnt care for it. i handled a sig p220 at a store and it felt great but i havent had a chance to shoot it. mostly the gun will be used at the range and it will be my home defense weapon.

    thanks for anyones input.

I suggest handling as many pistols as you can and decide which one's are comfortable to you. Once you have narrowed down your choices you can then shoot those pistols to get a feel of how the weapon will handle in your hands. There are a ton of choices out there and your budget (not just the initial purchase of the handgun but the ammo you will be shooting) will also determine which is best suited for you.

Try all the good ones - sig (226, 229), XD's, M&Ps, CZ 75 variants, HK, and 1911s. so many to choose from. the first gun i fired was a kimber 1911, and ive preferred 1911s since. my home defense gun is an XD-9, a solid pistol all around - never jammed, accurrate enough, and feels just right in my hand. You really cant go wrong with any of the models i mentioned above.

There are many good choices. Once you make up your mind be sure to let us know what you've chosen.

My first Love was BROWNING HIPOWER,for a 9mm and a good HDG. There are too many too consider. Price on a new or used BHP may not be in your neighborhood, but worth checking out nonetheless. In today's marketplace there are so many ammo choices that make a 9mm a solid contender! this one lies on my nightstand.

If your looking for feedback regarding the P220 check out the link below. Most is regarding the P220 Combat but it should apply to the whole P220 line. I have a P220 and i think it's a great handgun but i prefer to shoot my 9mm Sigs.

Look at one of the stickies. It's about purchasing your first semi-auto.

If money isn't an issue, I'd go with HK or Sig but if your funds are limited, I'd go with M&P or CZ... But that's just me.

You are going to get 100 different answers to your question. And every single one of them will likely be a high quality firearm, because the members of this forum have great taste.

While I also do not like Glock's at all for myself, anyone will tell you they are a top notch choice.

The above advice is all good. You need to rent and shoot as many things as possible. Different people shoot different weapons better than others. I myself would love to not be a miserable shot with a Glock, but I am. I prefer all steel/metal guns, that are heavier and have slimmer grips that I can get a high hold on, but with a more relaxed grip angle.

Rest assured, any well liked gun on this forum from Glock, Sig, CZ, Smith and Wesson, Springfield, Heckler and Koch, and many others will serve you well.

Many people will tell you that if you are planning to shoot and train infrequently, that a revolver will be much more reliable, easier to shoot, and safer for you to own.

                        Enjoy your journey!

Freq is on the money. Rent as many as you can to find what is comfortable.

My only suggestion is look at 9mm, it's cheaper to shoot. Cheaper to shoot=more practice.

Also, training will make more efficient use of your time and money. Any range you go to will have suggestions for their local guy. Even just an hour session can catapult you over people that are learning by trial and error.

                            Be safe and have fun!
