    Model 19 Equivalent

Is there anything on the current market that is equal to the S&W model 19? I own one and my dad has a couple of s&w revolvers and I was trying to see what I could get him for his birthday. I believe he likes the Ruger GP100 but not really sure what I could get. ANy help would be appraciated. Thanks

There really is no equivalent, except maybe a Model 66 if you can find one. What is your budget and where are you located? I might be able to help you find a 19-3.

586 has a full length barrel lug. Model 19 does not. I say look for a 66 in his favorite barrel length.

The 586/686 is an L frame. The M19/M66 is a lighter K frame. There is a very definite difference in the feel.

Ruger GP100 is more equivelent to the L frame.

            The M19 was discontinued in 1999 & the stainless M66 in 2004.

Used ones are a good value for the $$$ if you shop around and don't require a collector grade with box & goodies.
I will take a used S&W over almost anything new on the market today.

Sorry I should of been more specific. I want to get something that has the same weight and feel. The ones he owns are four inch barrels and those seem to be is preference, He would like a new magnum but not sure what to get him. J guess I should go to a gun store and get a feel for them but wasn't sure where to start. As you may know, pics and specs on the manufacurers website don't give you a good representation to actually holding one.

OK, just off of pictures, the gp 100 seemed to be the same. I'll probably have to look at the 586 you and blademan have pointed out. If he didn't want a new gun it would of been easier, I would of just got him another 19 or 66.

If he likes rockin' the Big Dog magnum loads a GP100 or L frame Smith would probly be the better choice. K frames were not really happy with a steady diet of full house boomers.

If your dad likes the GP100, that's a fine choice for a revolver, and will generally be cheaper than a comparable Smith. The Smith L-frames are roughly equivalent to the Ruger GP100. The Model 19 was a slightly smaller K-frame revolver, and the Model 66 was just a Model 19 in stainless steel instead of blued carbon steel.

Both those guns have been discontinued by S&W, but they have since introduced the Model 619 and 620, which are L-frame guns like the 586/686, but which don't have the full underlug barrel like the 586/686. The overall effect is the marriage of the half-lugged barrel of the Model 19/66, with the L-frame of the 586/686.

I just recently got a Model 620, and I like it very much. It handles and points like my Model 66, but has the slightly bigger frame (but it's not immediately noticeable) an best of all, is a 7-shooter instead of a 6.

Here's an excellent article talking about the Model 619 and 620.

The Model 66 is the stainless steel version of the Model 19 and was available in 2 1/2", 4" and 6" barrels. Great guns. I have one of each and will never sell them.
