    Wilson Combat extended slide release

Anyone else use one? I picked up one at a gun show today. It was a drop in for my Springer Loaded. Just by fiddling with it it already feels better. Easier to drop the slide fo-sho. If you are a lefty 1911 shooter like me, this part is a must.

I had one on my Loaded for a while also and found helpful for myself as a lefty too. I did take it off and retrained myself to "slingshot" the slide as I didnt really care for it's looks.

Are you better off than you were four years ago?

I'll be picking up this part soon. Good to hear it works and fits with potentially no additional fitting.

I'm not a leftie, so I'll cut you guys some slack. Otherwise I'd get on my anti-extended slide stops on 1911's soapbox
"You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means."
"What we get away with isn't usually the same as what's good for us"
"An extended slide stop is the second most useless part you can put on a 1911"

"While Ruger DA revolvers may be built like a tank, they have the aesthetics of one also,
although I suppose there are a few tanks which I owe an apology to for that remark"

are you anti ambi-safety as well?

            I think it looks great.

I think you are addressing Redcliff.
I shoot both handed so ambi safeties are the shiz for me.
My two minor concerns with extended releases since Redcliff would not take the bait; are more bulk in case of carry and not fitting the detent plunger correctly, allowing the extra weight of the extended stop to cause the stop to move up under recoil and lock back the slide before the mag is empty.
Properly fitted they are no problem, and the bulk may not be an issue for everyone.
The up side is that they sure are easy to operate with either hand.

I'm anti-ambi safety (I'm a righty, not wrong handed =P), but I'm all for extended slide stops...I have the Wilson unit on all my 1911's...it's much easier with my tiny thumbs

as an aside, the new Wilson slide stop I stuck on about 6 months ago had the "push in" feature, not that I had a hard time putting a slide stop in without adding a reassembly scratch to begin with

I wasn't aware that there was a problem...

I run one. It was drop in fit for me. Picked it up after another brand wasn't and jacked up my finish (temp. fix was to use a touch-up pen). I like the Wilson Combat Ext. Slide Release. Works well.

Since you asked; in my opinion, and you may disagree, nothing spells newb like an extended slide stop on a 1911. When I was a 1911 newbie 30+ years ago I had one but learned it's simply not needed, and it can cause malfunctions due to the extra weight, as well as the previously mentioned issues with frame, barrel and holster fit. It is not necesary, at least for a right handed person, for either reloads or malfunction clearance. The slide stop is best operated by the support hand for a right handed shooter when desired for reloading, or simply sling-shot the slide. Even with the extended slide stop unless you have a right thumb as long as a gorilla's you still won't be able to reach the slide stop without shifting the pistol in your right hand anyway.

While you may disagree, if you ask any 1911 pistolsmith of note (including those working at Wilson Combat) they will not recommend one. Look at pistols specifications from Wilson Combat, NH, Les Baer, Springfield Custom, or Ed Brown models and see if any comes equipped with one as standard equipment and wasnt just added at the purchasers request. If they thought it was a performance advantage it would be standard equipment on those models.

I do have a couple of 1911s with extended slide stops, they are more for target gun use than for real deal applications. My self defense 1911s don't have them and my USPSA guns don't have them either. Those extended slide stops tend to get bumped up locking the slide back or causing jams during a firing string.
