    Sig P220 Combat

So I went to the range yesterday to teach my nephew how to shoot (after a couple of long safety training sessions). The little guy is a damn natural and will easily out-shoot me if he keeps practicing. We shot my CZ's and a .22lr, but his favorite was a rented Sig P220 Combat. Turns out, its my favorite too. They are pricey, and a little out of range for me at this moment, but it's something I am definitely interested in owning in the future.

I wanted to get some P220, P220R, and P220 Combat owners' opinions, possible upgrades, pros and cons, etc.

I personally shot this thing like it was an extension of myself and was able to get all holes touching at 15 yds (I'm not a great shot either), and my nephew (13 yrs old) was able to group about 5" with 20 rounds. The only downsides I see so far were the stiff mag and expensive ammo. I wouldn't be shooting .45 very often, so the ammo price doesn't bug me too much. It seems like a great HD weapon.

Well, talk it up, talk it down, but let me know your experiences with it and maybe you can save me some money or help motivate me to keep on saving for it.

    Thanks,
    Daniel

my local FFL's didn't have any, but when they did, they wanted over $1100. I've seen them sell for less than that, and if I were to buy one, I'd have to wait for the best price.

I would highly recommend a P220. I own a P220R that I bought last year for $950 before tax and DROS. I've put approximately 1000 rounds through it without a single failure. It has been extremely reliable, very accurate, easy to break down and clean and if you look hard enough, you can find ammo for it for a decent price. As far as upgrades are concerned, I personally would not do any on the P220. IMO, it's perfect right out of the box. Hope this helps.

I have a 220 Combat and it shoots great right out of the box. I added a laser/tac light to the rail. Well worth the money in my opinion.

IMO, the P220 is one of the best .45acp handgun ever made. The Sig purist will steer you towards the older W. German or German made P220. While i do prefer my W. German and German made 9mm Sigs, my P220R has been reliable and has a lighter & smoother trigger pull than my W. German/German 9mm Sigs. There aren't any necessary upgrades to the P220R, it's mostly a matter of preference. You might want a different set of grips, the short reach trigger if you have small hands or if you wanted night sights instead of the contrast sights. Ammo cost isn't too bad if you have a WalMart in your area or buy bulk online. I don't find the single stack P220 mags to be stiff at all, i think double stack 9mm mags are harder to load. Really can't go wrong with a P220 and save yourself a couple hundred bucks by skipping on the Combat model.

I had wanted a Sig P220R Carry model for a long time and got lucky when one came up locally in my area. It is an awesome gun, as are my other Sig's. You cannot go wrong with a Sig.

I like the factory grips, as opposed to the Hogue grips mine came with. But grips are a shooter specific thing. If you get one with a rail, I would recommend getting the Surefire X300 with the grip switch. Replacing the sights are up to you as well, they are a shooter specific thing IMHO.

                Owned 220 (not combat),

To each it's own but IMHO Highly overpriced and overrated .45

Sold it and don't miss it.

Wow FiveSeven you're one of the rare ones that have something negative to say. Not that your opinion isn't valid.

My opinion is in direct contrast. I love my Sig. I have one of the Ruger P90's thats about 10 years old and that was my favorite .45 until I bought my Sig 220.

As for add-ons I know some people add the Tru-Glo sites, but to me the standard Sig night sights are perfect. I did add an inexpensive Hogue rubber grip sleeve, and a fairly expensive TLR-2 Streamlight.
Both of those additions weren't at all necessary, just fun.

love my combat. The only thing I recommend is that if you were to get one, use a grease like Milcom tw25b and dont use oil. I had a Bitone 220 before the combat and for whatever reason I wasnt as accurate with it. dont really need any upgrades, some people use hogue grips but that takes away from the point.

I felt exactly the same thing about my Sig P220. Sold mine last September and I haven't missed it. Held onto it for 7 years because I thought I was cool being a Sig owner. Never felt any satisfaction shooting it. To each their own I guess.

I have the 220 combat and think it's great. I am familiar with the Sig operation, and I like the fit in my hand more than my other sig pistols. I have super aggressive Hogue Pirana grips on it that feel good and look great, but would consider going back to stock grips as these have a nearly uncomfortable amount of grip. I have only put a hundred or two rounds through it so I don't have a firm grasp on it's point of aim or accuracy, but I have to believe it is more accurate than me. I love the look, other wise I would have bought an older non railed 220 or some other variant.

If you liked the P220 Combat, you'l LOVE the P220-ST! Give the ST some range time before you make your decision. I've got both, love them both but favor the ST. You can occasionally find both for sale via PPT on Calguns for under $900.
