My Observations about XD and Glock.

Hi Guys,

I am pretty new to hand gun or any gun shooting. Just shot three times around may be 300 rounds in total. First time i shot my friend's XD 40 (it was brand new) and it felt really good, grip and trigger were very nice and also didnt feel lot of recoil. Today i found out that turners is having Glock sale next week, so thought let me go try Glocks and see if they are better than XD, so that i can take advantage of the sale next week.

Today went to the indoor shooting range and tried Glock 17 and 19. Grip on 17 was very thick/wide and the grip on 19 was better but not like XD. Trigger was really hard (i dont know the exact term) compared to XD. and also both the guns jammed atleast couple of times each (may be very old ones).

Do you guys think my observations were correct? XD grip and trigger are better than Glock?

I am not trying to start a Glock vs XD war. I have a XD on hold and will be picking up on sat, i can still exchange for a Glock and take advantage of the sale.

I am neither a XD nor Glock fan, i want a good hand gun for the money i am spending dont care if its XD or Glock.


Please let me know your thoughts.

When I was shopping for my first handgun, I shot just about every brand the ranges rented. Glock 17/19, XD9,M&P,USP.... I got the Glock 19.

At the same time, my buddy got a XD9 and we trade off at the range. Personally, I don't feel the XD9 trigger is "better". I did like the XD grip more, but I shoot better with the Glock for some reason.

In your case, it seems that you think the XD is the better gun for you, and if that is the case, then I say you have the right gun on hold.

P.S. you didn't mention if the Glock you shot had night sights but I definitely like the 3 dot on the XD more than the Glock. And also, to me, Glocks are like Hondas, they're cheap, reliable and can easily be modded/personalized.

they had the stock Glock sights, they were rentals from a shooting range.

I shot horrible with Glocks, i am no expert just a novice but i did better with XD40, it may be just beginners luck with XD:-)

On the other hand one of my friend that came to the range with me shot good with Glock.

I was in the same position as you when buying my first centerfire handgun. I was split between the xd40c and the Glock 27. The grip wasn't much of a deal with me, both felt fine. I had grown up shooting revolvers and .22s so I didn't have much of a preference. What I didn't like was that the XD's trigger safety bit me every time it fired, and the Glock didn't do it.

I would caution you though, something was either wrong with the Glocks that you shot or your grip was off somehow. In my experience, Glocks don't jam. Yes, some probably have, but none I've ever seen or shot have ever jammed with good ammo. I've heard they could be sensitive to limp wristing, but I've had new shooters, little kids, and adults alike shoot mine, and none have ever experienced it. If you get a chance to shoot them again, I would make sure you aren't limp wristing and get a firm grip on them.

Whichever you choose, make sure to practice practice practice! Dry fire that thing a million times to get used to it (okay a million is a lot, a few hundred would be good though) and get used to the trigger.

No, the Glocks i shot did not have night sights. They are from a shooting range.

I would hazard a guess that Glocks fit a good 80% of the population. The other 20% could learn to use them well. However if you shoot better with the XD, then by all means get one.

Besides, if you end up liking a Glock better, you could always sell the XD for 90% of what you paid for it, add a little more, and get a Glock.

Buy what you shoot better with, don't listen to the glock/ [m&p (me)] fanboys. You're going to hear a million glock fans tell you to buy the glock because it has been proven to be reliable over the years. I listened to the glock crowd and I shouldn't have, it didn't fit my hand well and couldn't shoot the thing for cr@p.

I sold both my g17 and xd9 because they weren't for ME. Get something that fits YOU, not others.

Glock has a shorter trigger reset. Once you learn how to shoot you will learn that exploiting the reset is key to both speed and accuracy. The shorter the reset the better. Trigger reset is the distance you have to release the trigger before it clicks and resets and you can fire the gun again. A skilled shooter does not release the trigger during follow up shots beyond the trigger reset point. This not only shaves critical fractions of a second off the time it takes to make your follow up shots it eliminates excess movement which means you stay on target. The trigger rest on the XD is twice as long as on the Glock.

The XD also has other design issues that have reared their ugly head as they were tested over time. Some of which affect accuracy.

That said, the XD is nice gun. But the Glock is a superior design.

There is a lot more to firearms than how the grip feels in your hand and how sexy it looks. The more you learn about shooting, the better you will be at determining what design features make a gun good for your type of shooting.

That is NOT an insult. I had no clue how to evaluate which gun would be good for me until I took a professional firearms course with other civilians and saw them do night and day better with a Glock over my Beretta which I was trained on in the military. Once I switched to the Glock, my shooting improved by leaps and bounds. I needed a gun with design features that stayed out of my way and made my life easier. But I didn't know it. The only handgun I had any experience with was the one I was issued and would NEVER have come to realization that I would do better with a Glock if not put side by side with shooters using them and watching them surpass me. It shamed me into picking up that ugly chunk of plastic and giving it a try. I was utterly amazed at how much faster I picked up the methods being taught in the course and showed a massive leap in ability. No one was more surprised than me. You cannot argue with an experience like that. I've been using a Glock ever since.

Oh, and I hate the video. Total BS.

I own glocks and XDs.

IMO the factory trigger on a glock is better.

I have the most trigger time on an XD. So I have trained myself to work with the XD factory trigger. My XD is my go to gun. Its gone through thousands of round and multiple handgun classes. I have abused the hell out of it to see if i could make it stop working under fairly dirty conditions. It just kept on ticking.

As others have said. Go to a range or borrow one. See which works for you.

Here is something you should check out too. Go to your local range that rents guns ask them which is shot the most and which goes back to the factory for service.

Having owned both, I prefer the Glock. Also being a Glock armorer I must say that the Glock design is better.

Now, with that said... The XD is a fine pistol, and it shoots well. I've found them to be accurate and general work just as well as any other combat pistol. My main issues are too many safeties, higher bore axis, worse stock trigger, and complexity when detail stripping.

But, you really should rent both and see which feels better to you. You may also want to check out the M&P as it's a nice gun as well.

When I first started shopping my heart was set on a Glock. From the moment I held one, I knew it wasn't for me. The shop had a XD45 and the ergos seemed to fit. I bought it and I am very happy with it. A month later, I went back to get a XD9. They were out of them, but they did have a M&P 9. It felt great so I bought it. Again, I am very happy with it.
I think it just comes down to what fits you. Unfortunately, the Glock just didn't. I really like the upgradeability of the Glocks. Aftermarket stuff is everywhere.

If you can manage to "jammed" two Glocks, couple times in the same day. I think you should stay away from guns. Maybe ccw a knife or a set of nunchucks.

1. Bad cheap range ammo running in a very dirty rental gun?

2. You're holding the weapon weak handed. Limp.

I simply don't like the grip safety. It's glock all the way for me.

I know it has happened, but I don't know if it's happened any more than any other gun.
