    M&P9 shortage?! What now?

So I decided I wanted to try this whole striker fired thing, and with Apex Tactical in my backyard, the M&P was a great option (not to mention I have always loved the ergos and looks of the pistol). I went to my LGS/indoor ranged and negotiated a reasonable price and included a range membership ($160 value), and put one on order. They had one in stock the week before, but apparently it sold shortly before I went in. I was told that they had 4 on order and that they were due in June (this was back in April) and they put my name on one of them.

I put a deposit down of $200 and got my range card. I am a patient person, and I have other guns to shoot, so I wasn't worried about having to wait a couple months when I could have driven down the street a mile or two and bought one right off the shelf. The range membership was what sealed the deal.

Fast forward to July 18. I have been in there regularly to shoot and bug them about my gun, and they keep telling me it is coming. Today they tell me: due to a huge European contract, the guns have been pushed back 3-4 more months. I understand business and how things go. I am upset that I don't have my gun yet, and that I sold my perfectly awesome SP2022 to buy the M&P9.

But I have options. I can buy any other gun that they have in stock or that they can get from their distributor. They stock tons of XD, they have Glock, Sig, SA 1911, CZ, Baretta, Browning, HI-Point, and HK on the shelf. To be honest, I am not that interested in those. They also have a M&P45 in stock, but I have a relatively new p220 Combat that fills my need for a .45acp. So now what do I do? Do I wait 3-4 more months and continue to exercise patience? Do I buy something to hold me over in the mean time? Maybe a Glock 17 or CZ75B or SP-01? Do I consider the XD (Which I have always thought were a little fugly, but they have a couple dozen different models in stock)?

The other question; are the M&Ps really backordered that far out? Is everyone else having a hard time getting them? OR am I getting some kind of a run around? I don't think so because they treat me like a good customer (which I am).

I just don't know what to do. waiting 6-9 months for a regular run of the mill gun is pretty odd.

I read somewhere that Smith & Wesson has a large LE contract that they are trying to fill, so there would be a shortage of M&P's hitting the civilian market at this time. I actually sold my M&P40 to another Calgunner a couple of weeks ago, and he mentioned the same thing regarding the shortage of M&P's. He's from the San Bernardino area, and he said that all of the gun stores near him (Turners, Bass Pro, etc.) are all out of M&P's, and they are backordered. He was actually extremely happy to buy mine since he's been looking for one for a while. I've been to the Turners in Fountain Valley, On Target Range, and Fowler's Gun Room in the past few weeks, and only Fowler's had full-size M&P's in the case, but they were M&P45's; no 9 or 40. All 3 places still had M&P9 and 40 Compacts, however.

The M&P40 that I sold was my first striker-fired gun. I shot it a few times, and I decided that striker-fired guns weren't for me. I like having a hammer. So after I sold the M&P40, I went out and bought a CZ 75 D PCR Compact. Very nice gun, as are a lot of the CZ's.

They are getting harder to get for sure. I was in the market for a 9l or pro and had no luck tracking one down. I know that there are some places around that have the full sized 9 in stock up here in the bay area, I bet if you looked you could find one locally. I just looked on galleryofguns.com and they list them as out of stock on every model, not a good sign.

If you just want to go with something else, I shot a XD recently and I was really impressed with it. Unfortunately I didnt have a M&P to compare it to side by side but I shot my buddies full size 9 a couple weeks earlier and I think I may have liked the XD better. That said, I'm sure with the apex parts the M&P would easily win every time.

I would just convince them to let you try out a couple of the other options and see if you like one of them as much.

I ordered an M&P45 with Turners back in April. Still no word on its arrival...

Wow, I had no idea. Glad I got mine when I did. If you live in the Sacramento area. River city guns has them right now I am pretty sure.

Yeah, there were two in the county at gun shops that I didn't buy because I wanted the Range membership as part of the deal. So, now I wait for the M&P9, Switch calibers to the M&P45, or switch brands. I am considering all options.

From the email that I got from J&R Sports a couple weeks ago:

Rumor has it that Smith & Wesson was awarded a major contract for their M&P line of pistols. True or not, it is about impossible to get any M&P pistols right now. We have dozens on order, but the latest word is that we won't be seeing any until October.

I will say this. I absolutely love my M&P9. It fixed all of the problems I hated with my glock and then some. They only thing that kills me is the magazine restriction. I have quite a few "hi-cap" magazines for guns from Sigs to Beretta's to cz's and I chose the M&P 9 which I do not have any "hi-cap" magazines for. If that gives you any idea to how much I like the gun.

I order my 9mm FS back in May from Parallax tactical, still no word. So emailed S&W about it in June and here was their response.

                    "Sir
That pistol does have a backorder. The next scheduled production date is the second week of July. They would be shipped right after they were built to the distributors."

So they should be making some now, but I just emailed them again to find out the status.

Distributors have been out of them for weeks with no known delivery dates.

I have heard that they are only making civilian guns one day a week. The rest is to fill huge LE contracts.

The fact that they are selling huge amounts of firearms to LE makes me happy I have 2 M&Ps. I'm sure they wouldn't sell that many if they weren't good guns.
